File Name: README.TXT IBM UPS 3000XHV and IBM UPS 3000XLV firmware update Readme.txt Version 1.0 CONTENTS --------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Change History 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions 4.0 Configuration Information 5.0 Unattended Mode 6.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 7.0 Trademarks and Notices 8.0 Disclaimer _____________________________________________________________ 1.0 Overview -------------- 1.1 Overview about this code The current release of the firmware for the Embedded Network Module of an IBM UPS 3000XHV or an IBM UPS 3000XLV enables remote management of the UPS through a Web interface, Control Console (Telnet) interface, or SNMP. An Embedded Network Module utility, the Wizard, provides options to configure multiple Embedded Network Modules, using a configuration file. Similar to the previous release, this release of the firmware for the Embedded Network Module lets you configure outlet groups. The UPS can provide AC output to three outlet groups (groups of one or more AC outlets). By using the network interface to control each outlet group remotely, you can restart locked devices or shed non-essential devices to preserve runtime for critical loads. The main enhancements available in this release focus on these outlet group functions, improving and expanding the capabilities for managing groups of devices and for load-shedding. 1.2 Limitations (1) When SNMP access is disabled through the Web interface or through the control console (Telnet), no warning is displayed that the Embedded Network Module will stop and restart upon logout. (2) The Apply button on the TCP/IP menu when you are logged on to the Embedded Network Module through HTTP causes a warning and restarts the Embedded Network Module even if no modifications were made. (3) Changes to the Ethernet port speed setting do not take place immediately. To fix the problem, remove the network cable from the hub and reinsert it. If you are using a switch, go into the web/console interface for the switch and set the port to the proper speed/duplex value. (4) The "On Battery" event is not logged if the UPS switches to battery operation during a self-test. 1.3 Enhancements The initial firmware release provided the user with options to assign power outlets of the UPS to different outlet groups and to turn off, turn on, and obtain status about these groups remotely. The current firmware release provide the following enhancements for the use of outlet groups: You can name each outlet group. You can specify delay periods for turning off, turning on, and restarting outlet groups. You can configure outlet groups to provide automatic, sequenced, load-shedding when a problem occurs with input voltage or battery capacity and to provide automatic sequenced start-up of outlet groups when the problem is resolved. The current release supports the PowerNet Management Information Base (MIB), version 3.6.0., including two new OIDs for advanced device monitoring: apcDeviceStatus: the current status of the UPS. apcDeviceModel: the devices's generic model identifier. 1.4 Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: IBM strongly recommends this update release (firmware modules apc_hw02_aos_125.bin and apc_hw02_sumx_125.bin) to users of the earlier modules apc_hw02_aos_115.bin and apc_hw02_sumx_115.bin. This firmware greatly enhances the capabilities of switchable outlet groups for the IBM UPS 3000XHV and IBM UPS 3000XLV models. This update is not required UNLESS your system needs more precise control of outlet groups for the purpose of load-shedding or other sequenced turning on, turning off, or restarting of devices and groups of devices connected to the UPS. 1.5 Dependencies: - Requires IBM UPS 3000XHV or IBM UPS 3000XLV. - PowerChute Network Shutdown (optional). A utility included on the Embedded Network Module CD for reliable, graceful, unattended shutdown of multiple servers protected by the UPS when an extended power outage occurs. - apc_hw02_aos_125.bin: Embedded Network Module operating sysetem and TCP/IP stack. - apc_hw02_sumx_125.bin: UPS application for IBM UPS 3000XHV and IBM UPS 3000XLV. - powernet360.mib: The PowerNet SNMP Management Information Base (MIB) - Embedded Network Module Wizard, version 2.0.1: A utility for Windows(R) 98; Windows NT, version 4.0; Windows 2000; or Windows XP to configure the Embedded Network Module on those operating systems. - Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer, version 5.0 or higher; or Netscape(R) version 4.0.8 or higher for using the Web interface of the Embedded Network Module. Some Web interface features (data verification, Event Log, Data Log, and MD5 authentication) require that you enable JavaScript(R), Java(R), and Cookies for your Web browser. 2.0 Change History -------------------- 2.1 Fixes to firmware for the Embedded Network Module of the UPS, from release apc_sumx_115.bin to apc_sumx_125.bin. (1) Large broadcast packets caused the Embedded Netwok Module to warmstart. (2) Syslog messages sent to more than one server failed. (3) When sleep mode was scheduled sleeps, the UPS remained in sleep mode for the wrong duration of time. 2.2 Fix to PowerNet MIB and SNMP interface, from PowerNet(R) MIB, version 3.5.0 to 3.6.0: The upsBasicStateOutput OID did not accurately report the status of flag 17 and 20. Fixed to report it correctly. 2.3 Fixes to the Embedded Network Module Wizard, version 2.0.0 to 2.0.1: (1) FTP file transfers failed and reported no connection errors when path names were too long. Fixed to handle long path names. (2) When the Wizard was run on a computer with DNS enabled and was not connected to a network or did not have a valid DNS name, it appeared to hang for approximately 2 minutes. When run on a computer without a NIC interface, an error was reported. In both cases, certain network transfer options in the Wizard were disabled to fix the problem. (3) Couldn't save the file from the FTP transfer screen after clicking the Close button, because it generated an invalid file. Saving it elsewhere did not cause a problem. Fixed so that it can now be saved from the FTP transfer screen. (4) Unable to set date using the Wizard. The Embedded Network Module's date was not set to the date specified in the Wizard. Fixed so that date can now be set using the Wizard. 3.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- 3.1 UPS Installation To install and set up your UPS, see the Quick Installation Guide that was shipped with the UPS. 3.2 Initial Configuration You must configure the following TCP/IP settings before the Embedded Network Module can operate on a network: The IP address of the Embedded Network Module The subnet mask The default gateway To define the TCP/IP settings needed by the Embedded Network Module, use any one of the following methods: Use the Embedded Network Module Wizard. (See the Addendum on the Embedded Network Module CD.) Use a DHCP or BOOTP server. (See the User’s Guide on the Embedded Network Module CD.) Use a serial connection from a local computer. (See the User’s Guide on the Embedded Network Module CD.) 4.0 Configuration Information ------------------------------- 4.1 Configuring the Serial Port When you use a terminal emulation program (such as HyperTerminal) to access the control console of the UPS, first disable any service that uses the port. Then run the terminal program; configure the selected port for 2400 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control; and save the changes. 5.0 Unattended Mode --------------------- After you install and configure your UPS and its Embedded Network Module, it provides unattended graceful shutdown and restart (in response to a power failure or on a scheduled basis) and provides unattended load-shedding to reserve runtime for critical loads. 6.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number ---------------------------------------- 6.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/support 6.2 If you have any questions about this update, or if you have problems applying the update, go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QYL.html You may also call 1-800-772-2227. 7.0 Trademarks and Notices ---------------------------- 7.1 IBM Trademark IBM is a trademark of International Business Machines Corporation in the United States, other countries, or both. 7.2 Trademarks of Specific Other Companies APC, PowerChute, and PowerNet are trademarks of American Power Conversion Corporation, Inc.
