You can obtain the latest version of this readme file from the Web site for Virtual Machine Manager. Additionally, this Web site provides the "Virtual Machine Manager 1.0 Installation and User's Guide" in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). 1.1 Product overview --------------------- Virtual Machine Manager enables the use of the following virtualization applications in an IBM Director environment: o VMware ESX Server in a VMware VirtualCenter environment o Microsoft(R) Virtual Server When Virtual Machine Manager and these virtualization applications are installed, you can perform the following tasks from IBM Director Console: o Discover and report status about virtualization components o Log in to the management interface of the virtualization application o Perform migration and power operations on virtual machines 1.2 Compatibility with IBM Director ----------------------------------- Virtual Machine Manager 1.0 is supported for use with IBM Director 4.20. 2.0 CHANGE HISTORY ------------------- Sep 2004 - Support for only IBM Director 4.20 and first release of the Virtual Machine Manager product. 3.0 INSTALLATION ----------------- Virtual Machine Manager has three software components that are installed on different servers in your network: o VMM Server is installed on the management server that is running IBM Director Server. o VMM Console is installed on the management console that is running IBM Director Console. o VMM Agent is installed on a managed system that is running one of the following sets of software: o IBM Director Agent, VMware VirtualCenter server, and VMware VirtualCenter Web service o IBM Director Agent and Microsoft Virtual Server Installation instructions, including other system requirements, are provided in the "Virtual Machine Manager 1.0 Installation and User's Guide." 4.0 KNOWN PROBLEMS AND WORKAROUNDS ----------------------------------- Virtual Machine Manager 1.0 has the following known problems and workarounds. o If a user who does not have Windows(R) administration privileges tries to use the Start Vendor Software task to run the VMware VirtualCenter client, an exception error message is displayed that does not indicate the true problem. If an exception error occurs, make sure that the user has Windows administration privileges on the system from which the user is trying to run VMware VirtualCenter client. o After VMM suspends a virtual machine, the new state of the virtual machine is accurately reflected by VMM state icons. However, a Virtual Machine, Task Failed event occurs which can be misleading. The task failure occurs because VMM Agent receives a task failure message from VMware VirtualCenter before it successfully suspends the virtual machine. You can ignore this task failure. Further, do not create event action plans that are based on task failures that occur when virtual machines that are in a VMware VirtualCenter environment are suspended. o Sometimes one or two events are not received by VMM Server when VMM Agent is monitoring multiple events from power operations that occur on virtual machines that are in a Microsoft Virtual Server environment. This problem occurs intermittently when more than 50 virtual machines are associated with one host. When a power operation event is not received by VMM Server, VMM cannot update the state icons for the virtual machine. If this happens, manually discover the virtual machines that are associated with a host. 5.0 CORRECTIONS TO THE DOCUMENTATION ------------------------------------- The following corrections are for the IBM Virtual Machine Manager Version 1.0 documents. 5.1 Installation and User's Guide (vmm100_users.pdf) ----------------------------------------------------- o (Chapter 3. VMM objects and their discovery, on page 17) The following information is added to the explanation of icons for farm objects: Sometimes IBM Director Console displays the farm icon with a question mark. This icon indicates that IBM Director has a farm object whose state it cannot determine. This icon can be displayed after this series of events: VMM is installed, farm objects are discovered, VMM is uninstalled, and VMM is reinstalled. In this scenario, the previous farm objects are displayed again, but IBM Director cannot determine their status until credentials are entered for their associated coordinator. In some cases, the previous farm objects are not associated with a coordinator. They represent farms that are no longer present in VMware VirtualCenter; you can delete these objects. 5.2 Help system ---------------- o ("Icons for farm objects" help topic) The following information is added to the end of this help topic: Sometimes IBM Director Console displays the farm icon with a question mark. 6.0 SUPPORT WEB SITES ---------------------- The following Web pages provide resources for understanding, using, and troubleshooting IBM Director and systems-management tools: o IBM support page http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ This is the IBM Support Web site for IBM hardware and systems- management software.
