File Name: 19K8498.TXT IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Boot Flash Diskette for Adapters 2 Readme.txt Version 2.0 ========================================================= CONTENTS 1.0 Overview 2.0 Installation and Setup Instructions 3.0 Configuration Information 4.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 5.0 Trademarks and Notices 6.0 Disclaimer 1.0 Overview: This dos-bootable autoflash diskette contains the latest Intel flash utility FUTIL.EXE v3.20 and the latest Intel Boot Agent code version 2.6 for combined PXE 2.0 build 072 and RPL boot code. The flash disk will automatically detect your adapter and flash it with the latest combined PXE/RPL boot code. The adapters supported are: IBM Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapter 2 (34L1501) IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter with Alert on LAN 2 (34L1101) IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Management Adapter (34L1201) IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter with Wake on LAN (34L0201 or 08L2565) IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter (34L0801) and other older models. This v3.20 Flash code supports PXE 2.0 remote boot with IBM LCCM v2.5x or later with the above adapters across all IBM Desktop, Mobile Thinkpad with Dock, and Netfinity servers. 2.0 Installation and Setup Instructions To update the flash boot rom on your adapter: 1. Have the adapter firmly seated in a PCI slot on the PC system. 2. Boot up the system with this 19K8498.EXE disk. 3. You should see the message: Futil ver 3.20 Intel PCI NIC Flash Update Utility ... and the adapter will be detected and flashed with new code. 4. A successful message should then appear. 5. You can now reboot your system. When booting up your PC system and adapter with the new v2.6 combined PXE 2.0 & RPL code, you should see this message after POST: Initializing Intel Boot Agent Version 2.6 (Build 006) Press Ctrl-S to enter into the Setup Program ... IF you hit Ctrl-S at this point, you will be able to view the current default boot sequence - and you can also modify some of the boot parameters there to your specific needs, IF required. In most of cases, you should see this IBM Default Boot Sequence: Boot Protocol: PXE PnP/BEV Boot: Disable Default Boot: Local Local Boot: Enable Prompt Timer: 2 Setup Message: Enable Power Mgmt: ACPI or APM For IBM PC systems, please use this default boot sequence if you plan to run PXE 2.0 dhcp remote boot. If you need to run RPL remote boot, change the boot protocol to RPL. At this time, all IBM PC desktop and mobile system BIOS are designed to handle interrupt hooking for remote boot startup. So, PnP/BEV Boot, Default Boot, and Local Boot need to be set as described above to allow the BIOS to handle the boot process properly. 3.0 Configuration Information 1. For Power Management, you can set to ACPI or APM, depending on what your system and OS are set up for. If you are not sure, set up both the system BIOS and adapter boot default to APM. 2. In some cases, you may not see the 'Press Ctrl-S ...' message during bootup. This means that the Ctrl-S is there but hidden since 'Setup Message' may be set to 'Disable'. Hit Ctrl-S to set it to 'Enable'. OR you can leave it hidden as long as you know it is there if you need to modify the boot sequence. 3. For Wake on LAN and Remote Boot with IBM Thinkpad and Dock Station Selecta Dock 3, please also use the IBM default boot sequence defined above. Also, you need to pick up the latest BIOS update for your Thinkpad. 4. For IBM LCCM with this new combined PXE 2.0 & RPL code, please pick up the latest IBM LCCM update at: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/desktop/lccm 5. For IBM Netfinity server models 7000, 5500, 5000, users may experience 1805 PCI error during system bootup if the Netfinity 10/100 Ethernet Adapters used have IVY 2.x Boot Agent code with PXE 2.0 build older than 072 level. This can be fixed by re-flashing the adapter with this latest ETPFLASH.EXE v3.20 Flash disk. Or, if you do not need remote boot with the server adapter, You can avoid the error by erasing the Boot code in the adapter with the futil.exe in this diskette. With this diskette in DOS, type " FUTIL -ERASE " And the current Boot code in the adapter PROM will be erased. Reboot the system and there should be no more 1805 PCI error. 6. This Flash code supports 512K or larger Boot ROM only. 01/12/2000 4.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number 4.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 4.2 IBM Marketing Netfinity Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/netfinity 4.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QLY.html. 5.0 Trademarks and Notices The following terms are trademarks of the IBM Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: 6.0 Disclaimer ---------------------------- 6.1 THIS DOCUMENT IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.
