Automatic Reboot?: No

Status: General Superseded

Critical: No

Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700_800/10.X/PHSS_19160

Symptoms:
	PHSS_19160:

	- Java-GUI: The logon of a Template Admin or an operator
with no permissions on any systems caused a coredump of
the opcuiwww process. The server process is gone and the
clients get the error message "Management Server ... is
	  not running."
Now the login process has been changed to avoid the
abort and print a better error message.
	- Change of node name in Admin GUI was not possible, if IP
	  address stays the same
	- ITO messages went corrupt when the message was over 48
bytes and the 48th character is double byte character.
	- opccfgupld -add -subentity for the SNMP template
overwrites existing conditions with the same name.
Now existing trap conditions are skipped when
uploading trap templates in add-subentity mode.
	- If msg agent is down, heartbeat.polling creates critical
	  msg repeatedly within each HBP-interval.
	- Coredumps with SIGABRT during shutdown of opcdispm and
opcactm in very large environments. Caused no problems,
as the cleanup was done already.
	- String with multibytes in automatic action is truncated
	- MC/SG: Upon opchaltpkg OpC, the defined SERVICE_CMD
	 (ito.mon) is not halted
	- At the startup of opcmsgm you sometimes get following
error - and the server event correlation does not work:
	  "Cannot open pipe .../opcecap. ... (OpC40-616)"
	- Japanese ITO message catalog: Added new commandline
	  options for opcragt
	- Message receiver aborts or generates error messages while
uncompressing data (Invalid cookie after uncompression of
	  data! Error during message decryption/decompression.)
	- If uploading a monitor template with -add -subentity,
opccfgupld writes a skip message for existing
conditions, but actually they are overwritten (in add
	  mode !)
	- JavaGUI: An external node of type non IP is colored
by messages for IP nodes in the Java GUI.
	- opcdispm does coredump while checking license under
	  certain circumstances
	- There is a feature that the HBP interval varies a bit, to
avoid all nodes being in sync and using the RPC resources
at the same time. This feature works only for the first
interval - after that all HBP is back in sync.
	- The NT Virtual Terminal (PC) does not always work
	- MC/SG: Stopping server processes leads to critical
messages which are not necessary and are now avoided.
	- Memory leak in opcdispm
	- After distribution to agents (templates, actions,
commands, monitors) opctss processes hang in certain
	  environments.
	- API: opcapp_start() had a memory leak
	- Java-GUI: Variables in the Instruction Text Interface were
	  not resolved.

	PHSS_17365:

	- ftp error during installation issued a wrong error
	  message: "platform not recognized"
	- DCE Manager/reqsdr keeps open files/connections for NT
TCP nodes. UDP is now used first and not all nodes start
	  polling at the same time.
	- messages for external nodes were discarded if name not
	  resolvable
	- message manager might return wrong info about message
	  read.
	- opcsecfgdwn aborted with patch PHSS_17072
	- on MC/SG opcsg_halt_cmd did not kill all
	  the map/gui processes
	- msgs from non-ANSE agent were not delivered via
	  ANSE m2m msg-forwarding
	- message browser crashed when acting on shift-selected
	  msgs after browser start
	- Whenever the MPE Agent SW was installed the following
	  error was displayed:
stream_is_used: The specified number is not valid for
	                  this command
	- changes in agent installation files to allow support of
	  MPE 6.0 with ITO 4.0
	- opctmprpt was aborting with patch PHSS_17072
	- the message browser was aborting when a message was
selected with space key and the browser was empty
	- Agent and/or Template distribution did not work on MC/SG
with patch PHSS_17072 when used in a NNM and ITO
	  package setup (NNM/ITO-SG integration).
	- After installing PHSS_17072 on MC/SG with the NNM/ITO-SG
integration distributing the trap template was causing
	  the Admin. GUI to abort.
	- if a node was highlighted this could cause the OpC 50-13
error followed by an Admin. GUI abort upon the attempt to
install agent SW onto all nodes
	- monitor templates were not downloaded correctly if
	  template contained 1 condition only
	- the process monitoring script ito.mon for MC/SG did not
detect if the Message Receiver opcmsgr went down
	- the ITO MC/SG control script and monitoring script did
not make use of the restart-facility of MC/SG.
the new script templates of ito.mon, OpC.cntl and OpC.conf
will be installed to /opt/OV/contrib/OpC/sg/. These files
should be merged manually into the files currently in use.
	- in PHSS_17072 some Java-GUI Help files were missing.
	- opcactm and opcmsgm get into a hung state. Distributed
UIs are not updated any more.
	- memory leaks fixed: programs that use an API that lock a
mutex more often will slowly grow.
	- Problems in GUI while editing message source templates
	- Actions -> Server -> Regrouping: When a condition is
with many hostnames is entered into the node field,
	  the GUI can abort.
	- fixed opcackmsgs option '-l'

	PHSS_17072:

	- Resubmit of PHSS_16272.
The patches PHSS_16272 and PHSS_17072 contain the
same binaries. The patch PHSS_17072 was introduced to
add the missing superseded patches PHSS_15706 and
PHSS_13977, which were omitted from PHSS_16272.
PHSS_17072 should be installed on systems with PHSS_16272
to insure that patches PHSS_15706 or PHSS_13977 are not
allowed to be installed. Installing PHSS_15706, or
PHSS_13977 after PHSS_16272 could break the ITO
installation. PHSS_17072 prevents this from occurring.
On systems that have not yet installed PHSS_16272,
	  PHSS_17072 should be insNSMbb21533talled instead.

	PHSS_16272:

	- Agent install fails if user or password have special
	  characters (e.g. 'space' or '$').
	- Msg forwarding in hierarchy with more than two levels
	  may cause infinite loop.
	- Manpage opccfgupld is missing important information.
Manpage for opcdbidx is missing some options.
	- Before installation not all the needed directories were
	  checked for enough disk space.
	- Memory leak in some API calls executed as non opc_adm.
	- opcctlm can coredump when using developer license.
	- Request Sender writes continuously OpC40-435 and
	  OpC40-436
	- Messages are received once but are forwarded as
duplicates (with identical message ID) to the servers
	  Message-Stream-Interface (ECM)
	- ITA file transmission (bulk transfer) does not work due
to OA problem. File does not arrive.
	- opcragt -id did not work in the last two server patches.
	- When Novell nodes are set up in the nodebank with
heartbeatpolling, the "node is down" message will come
to the browser, but the 'agent is running again' does not
appear although agent is running already.
	- After deleting admin map via ovw, the admin GUI the node
bank is empty. (Happens since PHSS_14695)
	- Message reciever deamon (msgrd) can coredump in rare
	  situation.
	- More accurate error message for problems in ANSE
	  environments.
	- Java-GUI: Application 'ITO Status' fails, when MgmtServer
is not in responsibilities of this Operator.
	- Java-GUI: Enhancement: It now also support messages using
	  External Instruction Text Interface.
	- Java-GUI: Non-IP-nodes message filtering per Operator
does not work. Operators get everything as soon as they
	  have one Non-IP-node assigned.
	- Enhancement: New support tool: itochecker replaces
	  opcmnchk
	- Enhancement: Remedy SPI: Added functionality that allows
to override ITO default configuration settings and load
	  additional configuration files.
	- ovtrap2opc doesn't load CiscoWorks trapd.conf.
ovtrap2opc has problems with specific IDs > 2147483647.

	PHSS_15706:
	- This patch delivers the 2nd Version of the
JAVA based WEB-GUI. See PHSS_15706.text for
detailed information on the new features.

	PHSS_15703:
	- A message that gets processed in MSI and is forwarded to
another management server gets corrupted on the way.
Possible problems are truncated message text on the
	  second server.
	- The new Java-GUI delivered with patch PHSS_15706 works
correctly only with the display-manager in this patch.
Without it, an operator that does not have the group
'misc' assigned sometimes does not get message visually
updated from the Java-GUI after he manipulated it.
(e.g. after an 'Acknowledge' it does not get removed)
This is because the change event was not propagated
	  to them consistently.
	- The X-resource to configure the message group window
popup behavior - introduced with PHSS_15702 - changes the
default behavior. Before the patch for this was set to
'false'. This is restored with this patch.
	- Enhanced tracing of queue file accesses
When adding the following variables to the opc(sv)info
file queue file accesses are dumped to the trace file.
	  OPC_TRACE_AREA DEBUG
	  OPC_DUMP_QUEUE_CONTENTS TRUE (default: FALSE)
	  OPC_MAX_QUEUE_DUMP_LEN 600 (default: 36 - Dont dump
	                                    more than 600 bytes!)

	PHSS_15702:
	- After installing DCE patch PHSS_14920 (on HP-UX 10.20) or
	  PHSS_12595 (HP-UX 10.10) the troubleticket manager
and control manager stop handling queues. As a result,
the template distribution and other tasks remain undone
	  and the `ovstop` command hangs.
	- While manipulating ITO messages using the API or ECS,
ITO messages may get a new message ID. Up till now it
wasn't possible to find out the original message ID or
query all messages related to a certain original ID.
A new command and API have been added:
	        opcgetmsgids(1m) and opcmsg_get_msgids(3)
Note that you may need a patched ITO agent on the
server system. See the Installation Instructions below.
	- Up till now it wasn't possible to configure the auto-
matic popup of the Message Group Window for critical
	  messages.
Now you can use a new X-Resource setting
	        Opc.alertmsggroupPopup:False
	- It is now it possible to trigger the template
distribution from command line using opcragt(1m).

	PHSS_15637:
	- ITO A.04.00 works with the Event Correlation System (ECS)
version A.02.00 - but ECS A.02.00 is not tested for
	  year 2000 compliance.
The ECS A.02.15 version is tested to be y2k compliant.
This patch provides the necessary changes in ITO itself
to be compatible to ECS A.02.15.
The upgrade from ECS A.02.00 to A.02.15 is available
	  on the OpenView CD.
Note that this ITO patch is backward compatible to work
with the current ECS A.02.00 also.

	PHSS_15629:
	- When the JAVA GUI is used the display manager gets
into a hung state. This will block the action and
message manager. The queues will grow.

	PHSS_14695:
	- GUI crashes when notification method modify button
	  is pressed twice
	- The message browser of the administrator does not
come up always. Further investigation shows that
there is a coredump of the opcuiopadm process.
	- Manpage for opcdbidx is missing some options.
	- The command 'opccfgupld -replace' does not handle
	  actions correctly.
	- When the API for regestering for Message Change
Events is tried to be opened by opcif_open, this
call fails with code -36 (OPC_ERR_CANT_INFORM_MSGM)
when an MSI instance was opened before using the
	  same function call.
	- Changing symbol type of a regular node in ITO did
not write the information into the database. This
problem was introduced in the preceding PHSS_13939.
	- In case of assigning an ECS circuit to the
management server an leaving the window by
pressing 'ok' the Template will be assigend
correctly but it isn't displayed after reopening
of the Window. Therefore it can never be deleted.
	- Any operator can execute the 'Virtual Terminal
(NT)' with customized startup as administrator on
any NT node without knowing the password for this.
	- For starting IT/O and NNM within the 'ovstart'
sequence was an additional flag in the opcsvinfo
	  file introduced.
	- The opcmsga on several agents hang and don't send any
more messages. The opccmm on server is also hanging.
The Sync of the IT/A - Subagent fails.
	- The Heartbeatpolling on Windows NT- Nodes does not
	  work always.
	- The ovoareqsdr coredumps. This is caused by a memory
allocation until the 'maxdsize kernel' limit is
	  exceeded.
	- Four new scripts will be introduced. These scripts
are needed for the ITO + NNM + SG integration.
	- Every message which is passing the Message Stream
Interface (MSI) is generating the following message.
"xx/xx/xx xx:xx:xx ERROR opcmsgm (Message Manager)
	  (18076) [msg.scp:342]: Invalid message identifier
received. This error occurs if a old message is not
in the database or a new message is already
	  in the database. (OpC50-10)"
	- The Open Agent can't reach agent after upgrade from
	  IT/O 3.0 to IT/O 4.0 . Problem occured when ITO 3.0
server with short hostnames was upgraded to ITO 4.0
(which normally uses long hostnames). ITO status
failed (opcragt -status was OK). Problem occurs also
when a 'special' name resolution is set up.
	- There are performance problems during the setup of
new operators (even fails if too many managed nodes).
Therefore a command line interface will be introduced
within this Patch for solving the problem.
	- The opc_backup command will fail with PHCO_13540
	  (s700_800 10.20 tar(1) cumulative patch) or later
	  tar patch.

	PHSS_13977:
	- This patch replaces the HTML WEBGUI
	  with the JAVA based WEBGUI

	PHSS_13939:
	- Converting a date/time string with date 02/09/2000
to integer (sec. since 1900) fails. The range check
of valid days of a month calculates leap years
	  wrong.
	- If a scheduled action is defined for the last day
in each month (day of month = 31, month = blank),
the action will be executed on Feb. 28th 2000 instead
	  of Feb. 29th 2000.
	- Time template evaluation fails. Messages will be sent
to the wrong manager, in case of a DATE FROM/TO
definition with a 4 digit year.
	- The ovoareqsdr is growing to the maximum
	  (kernel parameter) then it coredumps.
	- When moving config info from one server to another
using cfgdwn/upld a directory is missing. This leads
to an error message when modifying this operator.
	- Sending a lot of messages with automatic actions
causes the action manager to stop handling the
	  actrespq after a while
	- In some Environments messages cannot be added to DB
	- User is configured for NOT being able to acknowledge
messages, but the user can display, own and THEN
	  acknowledge any message
	- Service Guard, the virtual node is assigned to a
template group holding the trap template then
distributing to the virtual node result in NO trap
interceptor running and the files in
	  /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/OpC/mgmt_sv/opcsgtemplates
	  are deleted.
	- Message events from messages from the message group
'misc' will not be forwarded to the Message Event
	  Interface
	- When downloading treshold monitor templates, if
the template has only one condition and the
condition and the condition has no intruction,
then the instruction for the template will not
	  be downloaded.
	- opccfgdwn downloads registration file xnmmibgraph
(for app. mibgraph) only for user netop, although
app. is registered with every user
	- opcack requires user and password information
	- Communication type for ITO A.04.00 updated with
	  /opt/OV/bin/utils/switch_commtype.sh - if the
parameter for this script was DCE_TCP the ITO GUI
shows DCE_UDP as the communication type.
	- ITO uses selection name for copy/paste instead of
	  hostname
	- In big Environments (a lot of node groups and
message groups) - closing the message browser
configuration screen causes a high CPU load.
	- When selecting nodes for broadcast command it is
possible to select all kinds of funny objects, e.g.
the IP internet symbol. These objects should never
	  make it into the list.
	- Several memory leaks in the server processes.
	- If the system is brought done via shutdown and any
ITO GUI are still running it is not possible to
shutdown the database properly as connection are
	  still in use.
	- if the distributed gui client is blocked
(stale NFS handles, SIGSTOP), the opc server
processes (opcactm, opcmsgm, opcdispm) are locked
also because RPC calls do not time out.
	- opctranm does not print errorlist when an error is
	  encountered.
	- opcuiopadm coredumps during startup.
	- Subagent installation says that ctla/acta not running
	  when the opcmsga is down.
	- opctranm sometimes hangs during subagent installation
due to a plugged up magmgrq.
	- ovoareqsdr can potentially have multiple threads
communicating to the same agent in parallel.
	- View-only operators can start operator-initiated
	  actions.
	- opcupgrade claims that Oracle 7.3.3 is not
	  supported.
	- Use instruction text I/F and deleting it from list
	  shows inconsistent state.
	- ovtrap2opc doesn't load CiscoWorks trapd.conf.
	- Insufficient error documentation
	- A critical error message appears in ITO message
browser during subagent installation (subagent not
	  registered).
	- Mass upgrade of 10.x nodes uncomfortable: each node
	  needs manual modify.
	- Auditing writes multiple identical messages for
	  opc_adm.
	- opc_backup won't mount more than one logical volume
on MC/Service Guard if the shared volume group
	  contains several logical volumes.

	PHSS_12543:
	- opctranm does not print errorlist when an error is
	  encountered.
	- opcuiopadm coredumps during startup.
	- Subagent installation says that ctla/acta not running
	  when the opcmsga is down.
	- opctranm sometimes hangs during subagent installation
due to a plugged up magmgrq.
	- ovoareqsdr can potentially have multiple threads
communicating to the same agent in parallel.
	- View-only operators can start operator-initiated
	  actions.
	- opcupgrade claims that Oracle 7.3.3 is not supported.
	- Use instruction text I/F and deleting it from list
	  shows inconsistent state.
	- ovtrap2opc doesn't load CiscoWorks trapd.conf.
	- Insufficient error documentation
	- A critical error message appears in ITO message
browser during subagent installation (subagent not
	  registered).
	- Mass upgrade of 10.x nodes uncomfortable: each node
	  needs manual modify.
	- Server processes have memory leaks.
	- Auditing writes multiple identical messages for
	  opc_adm.
	- opc_backup won't mount more than one logical volume
on MC/Service Guard if the shared volume group
	  contains several logical volumes.
	- OpenAgent buffers requests indefinitively.

	(A) Patch Installation Instructions
	    -------------------------------
	(A1)  Stop all ITO processes on your Management Server;
	      this includes manager processes, communication
processes and user-interface processes on the
	      machine.

	       - Stop all the ITO GUIs that are running, by using
	         the "File:Exit" menubar item

If your are running ITO Distributed GUI shutdown
ITO on all Distributed GUI clients as well:

	         - If your are running the Mount Model DGUI apply
the patch only to the server
	         - If you are running the Full Model DGUI apply
the patch on ALL DGUI clients

	       - Stop the ITO Manager processes:

	         # ovstop opc ovoacomm

If any ITO process is still running, kill it
		 manually:

		 # kill -9 <pid-of-orphaned-process>

If you are running ITO in an MC/ServiceGuard
	      installation:

	       - Apply this patch to all MC/SG cluster nodes
	       - The server processes need to be stopped with:

	         # cmhaltpkg OpC

	       - The patch patches files on the ITO shared disk.
Either make sure to place /etc/opt/OV/share/conf/\
	         OpC/mgmt_sv/ecs/modules/ito_module.ecs onto the
shared disk after the patch installation or mount
the shared disk manually before installing the
		 patch. For example:
(Names of vol. group and logical vol. may differ.)

		 # vgchange -a e /dev/vopc
		 # mount /dev/vopc/lvol1 /opt/OV/OpC_SG

	       - New template files for MC/SG operation of the OpC
package have been added by this patch to
		 /opt/OV/contrib/OpC/sg/ :
ito.mon - Script to monitor processes, should
be used as the service to be
			       monitored by MC/SG
OpC.cntl - control script for package OpC
		   OpC.conf - MC/SG configuration file for package
			       OpC
Please be sure to set all required variables in the
		 templates before using them.

(A2) Install the patch, following the standard installation
	      instructions.

	      2. Login as root.

	      3. Copy the patch to your /tmp directory and
	         unshar it:

	         # cd /tmp
	         # sh PHSS_19160

	      4. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install
	         the patch:

	         # swinstall -x match_target=true \
	                     -s /tmp/PHSS_19160.depot

By default swinstall will archive the original
	        software in /var/adm/sw/patch/PHSS_19160.
If you do not wish to retain a copy of the
original, copy of the original software, you can
	        create an empty file named
	        /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE.

Warning: If this file exists when a patch is
	                 installed, the patch cannot be
deinstalled. Please be careful when using
	                 this feature.

It is recommended that you move the PHSS_19160.text
file to /var/adm/sw/patch for future reference.

To put this patch on a magnetic tape and install
from the tape drive, use the command:

	        # dd if=/tmp/${PATCH).depot of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k

(A3) After installing PHSS_19160, restart the ITO processes
	      on your Management Server system:

	      - Restart the ITO Manager processes, and check that
	        the processes are running:

	        # /opt/OV/bin/OpC/opcsv -start
	        # /opt/OV/bin/OpC/opcsv -status

	(B) ITO WWW-GUI : Installation Instructions
	      ---------------------------------------

	    - This patch contains the ITO JAVA UI Version 2.
The JAVA UI is the replacement for the
HTML-based ITO Message Browser delivered with ITO
	      A.04.00

NOTE: The HTML-based GUI will be removed during the
installation of this patch. (see Q&A section below)

The ITO JAVA UI will also replace the ITO
Distributed GUI which will become obsolete with
the next major release of ITO.

	    - The Java-GUI version in this patch superseeds
	      the ones in:
	      PHSS_13977, (version 1 of the Java-GUI)
	      PHSS_15706 (version 2 of the Java-GUI)
PHSS_17072 and all the following that are
	      superseded by this patch.

	    - The differences between the ITO-Motif operators GUI
and the ITO JAVA GUI are:

	      Missing Functionality in general:

	       * No NNM-Applications

Missing Functionality in the Message browser:

	       * No 'Virtual Terminal' on Message Popup-Menu
	       * No Highlight in IP-Map (there is no IP-Map)
	       * Acknowledge only on 1-or-All basis, no submenu
	         for severity
	       * No 'own all' functionality
	       * No 'Set home Session' (saving of preferences)
	       * No Operator Reports
	       * No changing of passwords by user

	      Additional functionality compared to Motif:

	       * You can now configure Local Applications.

	    - Additional functionality and enhancements in this
release compared to version 1 of the Java GUI:

	      * reconnect after ITO server restart
	      * performance improvements through dynamic update
	        of messages
	      * view filters for the message browser
	      * access to the history database
	      * applications and application groups
	      * new local applications
	        accessable via variable <LOCAL_ON_JAVA_CLIENT>
See (C1) Configuring Local Applications below.
	      * escalation of messages (if configured)
	      * modify/delete annotations

	    - This GUI is NOT a replacement for the standard
Motif GUI because not all functionality of the
Motif GUI is available with this patch.

	    - Our recommended platform for the ITO JAVA UI client
is a Pentium-based PC with 150 Mhz (or more) and 32
MB RAM (or more) running Windows NT or Windows '95
in order to get reasonable performance.

	    - Performance problems with HP_UX clients: Although
the ITO JAVA UI client will function on HP-UX, the
performance with the Java Virtual Machine currently
available for HP-UX is not satisfactory on most HP-UX
machines. Therefore, it is not recommended to use
the GUI client on HP-UX; use the standard Motif GUI
instead. We know about that problem, and are working
	      on a solution.

	    - HPUX 10.01 is not supported because of the missing
	      Unicode font set (ucs2).

	(B1) Prerequisites
	      -------------

Before installing the ITO software, ensure that all
hardware and software prerequisites are met by your
management server. See Chapter 1 of the HP OpenView
IT/Operations Installation Guide for the Management
	      Server.

Note, however, that the kernel parameter maxfiles
(soft file limit per process) must be increased
compared to the value given in the ITO Installation
Guide (120). The new value depends on the number of
users accessing the ITO JAVA UI.

Use the following formula to compute the number of
	      open files per user:

	      28 + ((number_of_users) * 14)

For example, if you plan to have 20 users accessing
	      the ITO JAVA UI:

	      28 + (20 * 14) = 308

Set the value of maxfiles to a number higher than
	      308, for example 350.

Now install the ITO software as described in
Chapter 2 of the HP OpenView IT/Operations
Installation Guide for the Management Server.

The following section assumes that you have
successfully installed ITO, and that you have already
installed a supported web server as described
by the vendor of the server.

	(B2) Configuring the HTTP Server
	      ---------------------------

Install your Web server as documented in the
vendor's documentation and verify that the Web
	      server is running properly.
If you want to access HP OpenView Web, you need to
configure your HTTP server to do so. The
configuration will vary, depending on the type
of HTTP server you have. The following Web servers
	      are supported:

	      * Netscape
	      * NCSA/Apache
	      * CERN/W3C

This section describes how to configure these Web
servers for use with the HP OpenView Web Interface.

	(B3) Netscape Server Configuration
	      -----------------------------

To configure Netscape to access the HP OpenView Web,
select the Netscape server that you want to
configure and perform the following steps.

From the Netscape Enterprise Configuration window:

	      4. For Map To Directory enter
	         /opt/OV/www/htdocs/ito_op

	      5. Click [OK].

	      6. Click [Save and Apply].

Restart your Web server and open the following URL:
	      http://<server_hostname>/ITO_OP

Where <server_hostname> is the hostname of your
	      Web server, including the domain.

Ensure that the .exe extension is defined in the
	      following file:
	      /opt/ns-fasttrack/httpd-<server_hostname>/config/\
	      mime.types

	      add line:
	      type=application/octet-stream  exts=exe

	(B4) NCSA/Apache Server Configuration
	      --------------------------------

To configure an Apache Web server to access
HP OpenView Web, add the following lines to the
	      file <server_root>/conf/srm.conf. Where
<server_root> is set in the server's configuration.

For example, the default for Apache is

	      /usr/local/etc/httpd

	      Alias /ITO_OP /opt/OV/www/
	      htdocs/ito_op

	      NOTE:
Be sure to set valid user and group names in the
	      httpd.conf User/Group entries.

Restart your Web server and open the following URL:
	      http://<server_hostname>/ITO_OP

Where <server_hostname> is the hostname of your Web
	      server, including the domain.

	(B5) CERN/W3C Server Configuration
	      -----------------------------

To configure a CERN/W3C Web server to access
HP OpenView Web, add the following lines to the
	      file httpd.conf:

	      Pass /ITO_OP/* /opt/OV/www/htdocs/ito_op/*
Restart your Web server and open the following URL:
	      http://<server_hostname>/ITO_OP

Where <server_hostname> is the hostname of your
	      Web server, including the domain.

	(C) ITO WWW-GUI : Configuration and Maintenance
	      -------------------------------------------

	(C1) Configuring Local Applications
	      ------------------------------

This version of the ITO JAVA UI allows operators to
start applications locally on the JAVA-UI client.
The applications must be configured by the ITO
administrator using the "Add ITO Application" window
	      in the ITO administrator GUI:

	      1. Select [Actions: Application -> Add ITO
Application...] from the menubar of the ITO
Application Bank. The "Add ITO Application"
	         window opens.

	      2. Enter the application name, application group,
and a desription of your new application.
Note that it may be useful to add all your
local applications in an application group
	         called "Local Applications".

	      3. In the [Application Call] field, enter:

	         <LOCAL_ON_JAVA_CLIENT> command

	         where:

	         <LOCAL_ON_JAVA_CLIENT> is the variable that
returns the client on which the JAVA UI runs.

command is the name of the program to be
	         executed.

For example, enter the following to start the
application telnet on the local JAVA-UI client:

	         <LOCAL_ON_JAVA_CLIENT> telnet

	      4. Select [Start on Target Node(s) seleceted by
Operator] and [No Window (eg X Application)] as
	         presentation method.

	      5. Click on [OK] to add your application to the ITO
	         Application Bank.

	      6. Assign the application or application group to
the operators who use the ITO JAVA UI.

	(C2) Configuring for Performance
	      ---------------------------

The performance of the ITO JAVA UI depends on your
configured environment. The ITO JAVA UI has been
tested and works well with the following
	      configuration:

	      Object: Number:
	      ------- -------
	      ITO management server: 1
	      running JAVA UIs: 30
managed nodes in node tree: 400
	      messages in browser: 3000

	(C3) Connecting through a Firewall
	      -----------------------------

If you want to access the ITO JAVA UI from outside a
firewall, you need to open port 2531. Port 2531 is
the socket used by the ITO JAVA UI to connect to
	      the ITO management server.

	(D) ITO WWW-GUI : Questions & Answers List
	      --------------------------------------

This is a list of questions we have received
and you may be interested in:

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What Operating Systems do you support?
	      Answer: SERVER:
	                The server is the patched ITO 4.0 Server;
you can find all information in the
standard manuals. The patched server was
	                tested on:

	                  - HP-UX 10.10
	                  - HP-UX 10.20

	                CLIENT:
Because the GUI client is programmed in
JAVA it is highly portable and should run
anywhere where you have a JAVA Runtime
	                Environment (JRE) installed.
The client was sucessfully tested on:

	                  - Windows NT 4.0
	                  - Windows 95
	                  - HP-UX 10.10
	                  - HP-UX 10.20
	                  - SunOS5.4 Solaris 2.4
			  - Linux (RedHat 5.2)

NOTE: See our warning note at the beginning
	                of the 'Installation Instructions' section.
The use of the GUI client on UNIX is NOT
recommended at the moment due to
	                performance issues.

	                Not supported:
	                  - Windows NT 3.51 and earlier (no JRE)

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What Software-Prerequisites are there ?
	      Answer: SERVER:
The server needs one of the supported
			Operating Systems. Additionally we strongly
recommend the use of a webserver running on
the ITO server, in order to download the
			client software-packages to the	client-
systems easily and to use online-help from
the clients. See (B2) for details on the
			supported web-servers.

			CLIENT:
The only other SW ITO-OP really needs is
			the "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE).
			On MS-Win'95 and NT 4.0:
When you install the client-SW on the PC by
			extracting the .exe-package, a simple
dirctory structure is created. This can
later be removed by simply deleting the
ito_op dirctory. Currently we also install
the version of the JRE and that we
			require and the necessary GUI-component
			classes in this directory.
			Other platforms:
You must get and install the JRE yourself.
For HP-UX you can find it at:
			http://www.hp.com/go/java
Note, that there are different versions of
			the HP-UX-JRE:

	 		HP-UX JRE Version | Supported for ITO_OP ?
	 		-------------------+-----------------------
	 		1.1.3 | No - Not Y2K Compliant
	 		1.1.3.4 | No - Not Y2K Compliant
	 		1.1.3.5 | No - Not Y2K Compliant
	 		1.1.5 | No - Not Y2K Compliant
	  		1.1.6 | Yes
			1.1.7 | Yes
			2.1.0 | Yes - On HP-UX 11.00

To find out which version you have installed
			use the command:
			'/opt/java/bin/java -version'
which should give you an output like this:
			java version "HP-UX Java X.01.17.00 <date>"

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What about Copyright / Licensing?
Answer: With an ITO server license you are
	                granted an unlimited number of
operator sessions on this server. This is
also valid for the tools operators need,
	                for example the distributed
operator Motif GUI. The JAVA UI for
operators is a patch for the HTML GUI of
ITO version A.04.00 and therefore separate
	                licenses are not necessary. If
you still have any questions, contact the
ITO Product Manager Christoph Pfister at
	                christoph_pfister@bbn.hp.com

	      ------------------------------------------------------
	      Question: Year 2000 compliance?
Answer: We have tested the patch for Year 2000
compliance with the same testcases as the
ITO product. Both the server and the
JAVA client code passed all testcases
			and a code review.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What type of network connections are used?
Answer: There are 2 phases of network use:

	                1) Download SW:
The httpd is used to transfer the SW
to the client system (as a self-
			   extracting exe file)

	                2) Normal Client-Server communication:
	                   All requests during normal execution
are done via a socket connection to
port 2531 on server (like load all
	                   messages, own a message, ...)

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What happens with the HTML-based GUI?
Answer: During the installation of this patch
the HTML-based GUI is removed from the
	                server.
Note, that you must re-install the
complete ITO software if you wish to
continue working with the HTML-based GUI.
This should not be necessary and is indeed
not recommended as it is no longer
supported with the next major release
	                of ITO.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: Can several operators share one login ?
Answer: Yes, they can do than, like in the
			original GUI. The positive side-effect
of this is better performance and less use
			of resources on the server.
The only thing to note is, that you cannot
			differenciate which of these operators
			created a certain annotation, etc.
Especially if you have several read-only
operators, this is a setup-alternative to
			think about.

Question: How can I find out, how many JAVA GUIs are
currently connected to the ITO-server ?
Answer: You can use the 'netstat' command on the
port that the clients use for their socket
			connection to the server:
	                	netstat -a | grep 2531
Note that this also shows the connections
of clients that are currently not reachable
due to a missing network connection but who
had a session running before the network
			connection went down.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Question: What about running the ITO JAVA UI in a
	                web browser ?
Answer: Many JAVA programs can run in two modes:

	                1) as a standalone "application"
	                2) as an "applet" in a web browser

We have implemented both versions in the
first release of the ITO-JAVA GUI.
However, there was no real demand from our
	                customers for the applet version.
Test have shown that the one-time local
installation of the GUI-client as an
application is faster and more convenient
than the long download times you need at
every startup of the applet in a web
			browser. Additionally the implementation
of the Java VM in the browsers differs
from the standard which can cause problems.
Therefore we have now stopped the support
	                for the applet version.

	(E) ITO WWW-GUI : Troubleshooting List
	      ----------------------------------

This is a list of problems that have been reported
to us with the correspondent solutions:

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Something seems wrong, but I don't know
where to look for a clue.
Solution: There are several places you can check:
			1) The Error-Dialog Window that pops up
on the client when an errors happens.
			2) The DOS-(or terminal) Window that was
			   used to start the Java-GUI.
	                3) Check the status of the ITO-server:
command: 'opcsv -status' on the server.
			4) The regular ITO-Error log:
			   /var/opt/OV/log/OpC/mgmt_sv/opcerror
	   		5) If you have tracing turned on:
			   /var/opt/OV/share/tmp/OpC/mgmt_sv/trace

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: General problems with network, hostnames ...
Solution: Very often communication failures are
reported to us that are unrelated to the
ITO JAVA UI software but can be traced
to failures in the basic network
	                configuration. The standard error
message you receive in a DOS-window during
login is similar to the following:
	                +-----------------------------------------
	                | Error msg, 4:25:12AM, com.hp.ov.it.co ...
	                | Error creating comm link to agent:
	                | com.hp.ov.it.comm.OvEmbNode$CommLinkC ...
	                +-----------------------------------------
	                And a GUI-window saying:
	                  "Access is denied to myserver.xyz.com"

If you receive a similar message and you
can't connect to a system, perform the
following quick checks before you report
	                the problem:

	                1) Is the machine reachable at all?
For example, if it is switched off, it
	                   can't be reached.
-> try the 'ping' command on your DOS
	                      window:
	                      c:\> ping myserver
	                2) Short or Long Hostname?
-> Try the fully qualified hostname in
all calls, if your network can't
find the server with the short one:
	                      c:\> ping myserver.xyz.com

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: The .exe file is not downloading from the
	                server.
Solution: Check the mimetype settings in the
config-file as described above. After the
change, you must stop and restart the
web server because only then the config
	                settings are read.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: The GUI window is gray and does not update
	                or react after an action.
Solution: This may happens when the GUI server
is very busy and the GUI client waits for
data for an update. Be patient and
	                wait until the GUI returns.
Do not try to start the desired action
again and again if you don't get an
immediate respose. It can take a short
moment until the busy cursor is set.
The performance will be improved a lot
			in the ITO 5.30 release.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Motif-applications do not start when started
from the application tree. There is no error
	                message displayed.
Solution: Motif-applications with windows cannot be
run on a PC display unless you use a
	                third-party product like 'Reflection-X' that
	                offers this capability.
Hint: Some UNIX commands (e.g. sam) offer a
'-display' option that you can add in the
'Start Customized' dialog, and send the
	                window to an X-Terminal instead.
The ITO agent does not send any error
messages in this case, so that the GUI
is not able to recognize the problem
	                situation.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Starting an Application is difficult, and
the Help is not correct in this area.
Solution: This is a known problem. Java does not
	                support Drag & Drop yet.
For now, you will have to select (a)
Node(s) first, then hold <CTRL> and select
the Applications with the right mouse-
button which pops up the 'Start' menu.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Starting the client on HP-UX returns the
	      		Error: "Unable to initialize threads:
			cannot find class java/lang/Thread"
Solution: Most of the problems can on Unix can be
solved by looking into the script:
			/opt/OV/www/htdocs/ito_op/ito_op
Often it is just a wrong setting of
the environment variables or a wrong
			installation path on your system.
The script can be adapted to your needs.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: I start the GUI, but after the login nothing
happens. In the Errlog of the server I find
the following info: ... Can't initialize
iconv to convert string from "iso81" to
			"ucs2"
Solution: As you can find in the prerequisites above,
we don't support HPUX 10.01 because of the
missing unicode font set (ucs2). Usually
it should be available with the newer
HP-UX verisions, but occasionally there are
			misconfigurations in the file:
			   /usr/lib/nls/iconv/config.iconv
It must contain a line like this:
	                 iso81 ucs2 iso81=ucs2 lsbucs2.sl
If you can't find the original file, try to
			get it from another system.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: I see some acknowledged messages in my
active browser. If I try to acknowledge
them, it says "Operation already performed"
Solution: Most likely your connection to the server
	      		is interrupted.

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: Different implementation of the JAVA UI
	                components on other platforms.
Solution: The GUI client was programmed in JAVA, and
	                is therefore highly portable. However,
at the same time, it must rely on the
	                implementation of the Java Runtime
	                Environment (JRE) on these
	                platforms. Apart from the performance
problems on HP-UX, the implementation of
the JAVA UI components differs on
different platforms. There may be small
problems caused by these differences in
implementation but they cannot be solved by
	                the ITO JAVA UI itself.
These problems may disturb the use to a
small degree on certain platforms but all
the funtionality should be usable. It is
not necessary to report these issues to us
if it works correctly on our reference
platform for the GUI (which is Windows),
unless you are unable to use some
functionality. The best results can be seen
	                on Windows '95 or NT.

On other platforms you might find small
	                problems with:
	                  * Window and contents sizing & alignment.
	                  * Multi selection with right-mouse button
	                    on HP-UX.
	                  * Starting applications on HP-UX
	                    (selection is difficult)

	      ------------------------------------------------------
Problem: In the opcerror log are many entries like
	        	this:
	        	 WARNING opcuiwww (ITO-SE GUIserver)
	        	(7187) [OvCorUiCommLinkDataSocket.C:253]:
	        	Invalid login. (ITO-SE217-1)
From the timestamp I see that they happen
	        	every 30 seconds.
Solution: Your Java-GUI server must be of the same
release as the client is. In this case,
the standard refresh cycle of an incom-
patible client causes this error message.
(Note: opcuiwww of PHSS_17072 and PHSS_17365
are compatible to client PHSS_16272 )

	      ------------------------------------------------------

	(B) Patch Deinstallation Instructions
	    ---------------------------------
(B1) To deinstall the patch PHSS_19160 run swremove:

NOTE: Before removing the patch, stop all
ITO server processes, as described in
		    the Patch Installation Instructions (A1).

	      # swremove PHSS_19160

NOTE: If you have had Patch PHSS_17072 installed
before this patch (PHSS_17365), you might
		    encounter Errors of this type:

ERROR: Cannot access the source file
	            "/opt/OV/www/htdocs/ito_op/help/aknw.gif":
No such file or directory (2).

		    in the file /var/adm/sw/swagent.log during
		    deinstallation.
They can be ignored, nothing will be corrupted.
