*** EXILE SOLUTION by Dan Doran ***

Before I hand you over to the capable hands of Dan, I would like to
express my gratitude for this epic solution. I hope you've enjoyed digging
through the secrets of Exile, and if you've enjoyed playing the game on the
BBC, keep your eyes on the Databay - there may be a surprise in store.

  HAL

                                 *  *  *

As stated in the manual, you have had your Destinator stolen by Triax as
soon as you parked in geostationary orbit around the planet of Phoebus.
You are marooned. Your mission has drastically changed from rescuing
survivors. Now you have to retrieve your Destinator as well, else were all
dead.

If you have read the novella youll know Triax lives somewhere deep
within a network of caves. According to a member of the crew, there is a
transporter that will take you to Triaxs secret laboratory where he has
built a maggot machine which he intends to use to manufacture an army of
maggots to over-run Earth. There is also a rune slab, which cannot be
blown open using weapons, a wind tunnel, different coloured monkeys and
wasps and viciously murderous robots.

The following text describes a possible way to complete the game. If the
going gets tough, take a break, but dont give up. It may be an idea
during the rest to read through the next part of the solution, so you
understand why certain things are done first.

You start off in the Perseus. A green figure briefly appears and steals
your Destinator. This is the last of Triax you will see for a long while.
Press the button to the right of you to unlock the doors of the spaceship.
Now, when you walk on the doors, they will open.

Go out of the spaceship and head east. You will find a grenade behind a
shrub, well into the windy area of the Aurora Plain. Take it, go to the
Pericles and stand beneath its undercarriage. Here, you will see a burger
which will endeavour to kill you.

Descend the shaft below the burger, avoiding its shots and drop the
grenade on the door. Quickly move to the left and lie down on the ledge.
The grenade will blow open the door.

As you descend, you will come across an inverted shrub in a plantpot.
From this comes some round things called lightning balls. Move up the
steep slope to the left, and enter Hamlet Cave. Here you will find a
grenade stuck on a wall, and a wasps nest. You can make the bird from the
planet surface follow you in order for it to eat some wasps while you
collect the grenade.

Proceed to Waters Tunnels. Go to the door with the robot and energy pod
behind it. Gently touch the door and prepare for the emergence of the
energy pod. This is a bit tricky because the robot fires heat-seeking
projectiles, and sometimes they dont hit the pod, which should come out
to you. As soon as you have stored it in your suit, it is time to...run!

Go down to the monkeys below Orotund Cave. Carry on down to Drey Tunnel
until you come across a birds nest, with two yellow birds inside. Wake
the birds and jet up to the cave in which there is a wasps nest and an
urn. Just before you enter the cave, remember your position outside.

Go in - the birds will follow you - and pick up the urn. Be careful now
because you are prone to attack from the wasps, although the birds may eat
some of them. Taking the urn over the slope leading out will close the
tile door, trapping you inside with the wasps.

There are two ways in which to get the urn out: You may throw it out, or
quickly fly it out. If the urn is still in the cave when the door closes,
teleport out and go to the yellow plantpot near the monkeys and fly
through it. A nearby door will open and will be able to go back and try
again.

When you have the urn out, take it west, where youll find a deep pool
of water at the bottom of Nemesis Tunnel. Fill the urn carefully as harsh
movements will spill it. Unfortunately, there is a small birds nest
nearby, and the bird tends to knock the urn.

Now place the urn on the far right of the tile door in the cave with a
fire in it, just beneath the birds nest. Remember all your positions
here. Now go back to the trigger plantpot near the monkeys. Once the door
has opened and the fire has been extinguished by the water, teleport back
and pick up the object in the pot. This is the RCD.

Pick up the urn, go out and drop the RCD just above this cave. Retrace
your steps to the place where you first saw the lightning balls and throw
the urn down to the bottom. Turn into Hamlet Cave and collect four wasps.
Obviously you must be careful with these but, as ever, a bird will help
protect you.

Drop down to the monkeys at the bottom of Orotund Cave and feed a wasp
to one of them. Get that same monkey back in its nest and it will throw an
energy pod out. There are four to collect in this special pack of blue
monkeys.

Go down Drey Tunnel, awaken the birds, and go up to Honeycomb Cave. At
the bottom of the cave, collect the pass under the protection of the
birds.

Teleport out and go back to Orotund Cave. Use the RCD to open the door.
The robot will come out shouting and guns ablaze. You can either run away
- returning when you have lost it or try a grenade by priming it and
pushing against the robot. Once the robot has been despatched, you may
enter the cave and collect the pistol. The button inside will activate the
transporter nearby.

You must enter this transporter, which will take you to Rune Cavern
where you will be attack by a very harmful flock of white birds. To escape
these terrors, enter the transporter in Orotund and quickly go upwards,
remembering your positions on the way.

As you fly out the top of the cave, some birds may follow and be
buffeted by the winds, but will always be back at their nest if you have
not killed them. They will not attack you if you cannot see them, or them
see you.

Teleport back to Rune Cavern and gently fly upwards and out of the top
of the cave, again ensuring that you either pick up the pass or knock it
from its resting place. If you dont succeed, try again without forgetting
to remember your position. Collect the second pass from the Aurora Plain.

Fly to the capsule attached to the Pericles, unlock the door using the
RCD and pick up both grenades. Then its back down to the first lightning
balls you came across, and wipe them out using the ol six-shooter pistol.

Unlock the door opposite the nest, avoiding the gunfire from the robot
inside. A grenade, thrown at its base, will quickly despatch it. Pick up
the urn, enter the tunnel, and fly over to the pink table opposite. Drop
the urn to the right of you.

To move the table, stand on it, aim the pistol at the left edge and
shoot it off the ledge. Remember your position here. If you stand where
the table used to be, you will pass through a secret passage and into
another cave. So, drop the urn through the secret passage and follow it
through. Go up toward the transporters.

Beneath both transporters are small secret passages, the left-hand one
containing lightning balls and the other another white robot. You must
destroy the lightnings and, should you wish, the robot. Stand next to the
left-hand transporter, where you should see the icer on a tiny ledge.

Aim the pistol at the icer and fire through the transporter beam. The
icer should be shot into the right-hand transporter. During this
procedure, you may hit the button located near the icer. If you do, you
must reset it to its original out position.

Entering the right-hand transporter, you end up in Lyre Tunnel, near an
inactivated transporter. Quickly pick up the icer and teleport out -
killer birds are after you, and its not a good idea to hang around.

Collect the urn from the Eridanus network and it drop between the secret
passages beneath the transporters, remembering all your positions here.
Then, go up to the right-hand transporter, aim, and shoot through the beam
to hit the button, so that it is in. This action alters the destinations
of the two transporters. Pick up the urn and enter the left-hand
transporter. You are now in a totally different set of caves.

You are currently in the Cavern of Sarawak. Behind you is a burger, and
in front of you is a transporter, a pass and a nest of lightning balls.
When the lightnings come after you, they enter the transporter which takes
them to the left-hand transporter in Eridanus, so they transport back
here, where you first entered this cave. So, fly upwards, drop the urn in
the niche on the left, and remember a couple of positions here.

Aim downwards and shoot all the lightnings as they re-appear from the
transporter. Then, pick up the urn and head over the incline above the
transporter. To the right is the very strong wind tunnel mentioned in the
novella. Fly down very close to the left-hand wall, making sure you dont
get swept away by the strong wind.

The wind effects here are very intense, but not uncommon, so you must
get used to them. You are moderately safe here, but be wary of the burger
at the top of Sarawak, and the one nearby where you appeared.

Pick up the pass and, carrying the urn, fly right across the wind tunnel
and into the tunnel opposite, not the one above. A door will close just
before you reach it.

Drop the urn, and teleport out. Then make your way back across the wind
tunnel, into Gemini Tunnel and drop the RCD at the very end of it. Then go
back to Behemoth Tunnel with the closing door, collect the urn and head
right, along Yarrow Tunnel, until you come to a red bush. This bush is
very dangerous and must not be touched.

Go up to Artesian Cave and fill the urn with water. Retrace your steps
back down and then proceed up Sulaco Tunnel and to the vertical tunnel
just before Puck Cave, making sure you dont hit any mushrooms or walls.

Descending, youll find a wasps nest beneath a tile door. Drop the urn
next to the gap and lie next to it, pushing the urn through. About face!
And shoot through the joint between wall and door with the pistol, until
the nest explodes.

Then turn around, lie down and shoot the urn the rest of the way through
the crack. The fire should be put out by the spilt water. Before you
enter, go to the tunnel leading to Puck Cave and scroll the screen to the
right. You should make out Fluffy, one of the previous crew-members. Fire
your gun to attract its attention and wait patiently for it to jump at
you.

When you have it, take it to the cave where you left the urn. Throw it
through the gap and shoot the button while lying down. The tile door will
push you in.

Place Fluffy next to the button, and go down through the secret passage
plantpots and wait until Fluffy presses the button. Once inside, get the
pass and press the button. Leave the boulder because you dont have enough
power lift to get if off the ground.

Throw Fluffy out through the gap, pick him up and throw him down Sulaco
Tunnel so he ends up in the pit in the middle of Yarrow Tunnel. Retrieve
the urn and fly down to Yarrow Tunnel. Drop the urn in the red bush far to
the right.

Collect Fluffy and make your way back to the RCD at the beginning of
this section in Gemini Tunnel. Drop Fluffy, pick up the RCD and...run - to
the closing door in Behemoth Tunnel. Unlock it and continue to the right,
where you will find another closing door. This problem is no problem,
though, because we have the pass and RCD to unlock the door.

Enter the small tunnel and stand beneath the plantpot. Lots of energy
pods will come raining down on you like bread from Heaven. Collect these
and teleport all the way back to Eridanus. Its time for some action!

Arm your icer. Go to the pink table and shoot it into the lowest tunnel
on the left. Fire at the robot beyond and, when flashing, push it into the
transporter by either shooting it upwards, or placing it above the
vertical door and pressing the button. Push the table in after it.

It transports to a cave in the Waters network with two white birds in
it, below a smaller cave with an energy pod in it, and above the tunnel
with the heat-seeking robot and energy pod. It will kill both birds.

Proceed to the heat-seekers tunnel and shoot the robot until it
flashes. If youre in danger of being shot apart, the urn makes a handy
shield. Push the robot firmly out of the tunnel and off the edge, giving
it one last blast! For luck, of course.

Remember your position here, then enter the tunnel youve just cleared
and unlock the white door. The burger at the summit of the hill will turn
to face you. Teleport away! One shot is fatal.

After a couple of shots, you may see an object bouncing off the walls.
Collect it; the jetpack booster. Should you hear the sound of something
entering a transporter, the boosters been blown into a nearby transporter
and to the top of Sarawak Cavern. Get it.

Proceed to Eridanus, testing the jetpack booster on the way. Press the
button near the transporters again, so it is in the in position. Throw a
grenade in the right-hand transporter, which destroys a burger in Argus
Tunnel, and press the button again.

Enter the right-hand transporter to transport to Lyre Tunnel. Arriving,
switch the transporter on using the RCD and enter it. You will re-assemble
at the top of Sarawak. Cross the wind tunnel at the bottom and fly up to
Amidst the red mushrooms is a boulder. Shoot it off the right-hand edge
and then take it to the wind tunnel using the jetpack booster.

The best way to get down the wind tunnel is to hold a boulder and boost
thrust down legs first. Keep descending until you reach the first tunnel
on your left. Drop the boulder at the far left of this tunnel and remember
your position here before proceeding down the slope, into Askance Tunnel.

At the top of this cave is a wasps nest, which is only useful if its
destroyed. Go to the tile door outside of Diapason Cave, and wait for a
monkey to appear on the ledge next to the door, thus opening it. Charge in
with icer ablaze and fly up to the second door. Wait until a monkey goes
near the door below again, and this door will open. Enter, collect the
first whistle and teleport back to the boulder.

Pick the boulder up and descend further down the wind tunnel. When you
reach it, drop the boulder in Palermo Cave on the right, and remember your
position there. Now boost left and down into Eyre Cavern.

Destroy the piranha nest in Eyre Cavern, which will lay dormant the
plant near the Antipodes Tunnel, and then go right, over the wind tunnel,
towards Pascal Cave. Press the button in the cave below, which is
protected by piranhas. This will change the colour of a tile door near the
Antipodes Tunnel so that when touched, it opens.

Return to Eyre Cavern, and continue to the Antipodes Tunnel. A floating
fire will awaken and either chase you, in which case dive into the water
in Eyre Cavern, or it will disappear to the top of Antipodes. Should it do
so, open the tile door and boost through the bush on the other side.

Once into Hydra Cave, remember a position beneath the pier formation; it
is the deepest part. To collect the pass here, make your way towards the
monkeys and, while next to the gap in the wall, jump on them and crawl
through. If this fails, try pushing against the gap by pressing Q, P and
@, then nudge Tab to turn you around, and final release P, to crawl
through.

Once through, collect the pass and teleport back to Palermo. Leave the
boulder, but fly up the wind tunnel. When you reach Sarawak, retrieve
Fluffy from there or Gemini Tunnel, depending on where it went. Then
facilitate the use of the transporter at the bottom of Sarawak and you
will eventually end up in the Pericles. Collect the grenade there and
proceed, with Fluffy, to the Eridanus transporters.

Shoot through the transporter beam to make the button go in. Enter the
right-hand transporter and drop Fluffy where you appear - Argus Tunnel.
Unlock the door to the left and proceed past the little niche beyond until
you see a red door. Unlock it, quickly lob in a grenade and fall back. If
you have no grenades, shoot the burger with the icer. Wander through and
pick up the other grenade (if it wasnt destroyed).

Retrieve Fluffy and fly up to the Waters network where you will find a
small gap in the wall next to a plantpot. Destroy the lightning balls that
appear and throw Fluffy through the gap. Stand clear, so he doesnt see
you, or shoot him with a couple of pistol shots. However, he must press
the button to the right.

Let Fluffy see you, making sure he doesnt press the button again, and
drop him down...to the bottom. However, you must unlock the red door on
the left leading to the second whistle. Enter inside.

Normally you would have been destroyed, but when Fluffy pressed the
button nearby, it de-activated the Waters burgers. Fly down the little
trench at the bottom, and press Control, W, L and @, releasing L
occasionally to crawl through the gap and collect the second whistle.

Make your way round to the place where you found the jetpack booster,
and walk up to the summit of the slope where the lethal burger is. It is
deactivated too. Continue further until you see a transporter, then drop
through the plantpot leading to the button Fluffy pressed. Press it and
when you stand beneath the plantpot, youre in for a pleasant surprise.
More energy pods! Keep pressing the button until no more pods come out,
and then reset the button so the transporter is off.

Either teleport all the way back to your ship and fly to Eridanus or go
directly there. Arriving, remember your position between the two secret
passages, then de-activate the left-hand transporter.

In the little cave above is a grenade-launching burger and the
protection suit. Get the burger to fire at you, and pick up as many
grenades as you can store and teleport out. De-prime the grenades and
remember your position. Return to the little cave, collect the protection
suit and teleport out again.

Retrieve the RCD, press the button so it is out and walk into the
right-hand transporter, and then enter the transporter in Lyre Tunnel,
which takes you to Sarawak Cavern. Drop the RCD and arm your death-dealing
icer to destroy the burger at the top of Sarawak. Pick up the RCD and
unlock the door leading to the Pericles engine. Fly down to Behemoth
Tunnel, throw the RCD into the transporter and destroy the burger nearby.

Then return to the engine; the button switches it on and off. Operating
the engine and the door that closes with it must be practised as it can be
very frustrating later on, fending off attacks...

Remember all your positions beneath the button and walk to the left
where you will find a transporter, a robot, and Chatter. Carefully dodging
the active robots shots, get a grenade from your pocket and throw it
through the gap above the transporter.

This should make the robot flash, rendering it helpless for a while. In
which case, throw another grenade in to blow it through the transporter.
Dont worry if Chatter goes through as well; he has to come out anyway.

Teleport back to the button, and switch the engine on. The other robot
will be destroyed. If Chatter is still in the other cave, get him out with
the same procedure as the other robot.

Push Chatter down to Behemoth and into the far left corner. If you have
only one grenade left, collect more from the grenade burger and de-prime
them.

Now cross the wind tunnel, go along Yarrow Tunnel and remember your
positions near the urn to the far right. To get into the gap, try the same
method as you used when trying to get the red pass in Hydra. The urn will
stop you falling into the bush. Sometimes.

Once over, you will encounter a wasps nest. Throw two grenades at it
and teleport out. Go through the gap again, and see if the nest has been
destroyed. If it hasnt, try again, otherwise collect four more grenades
and go through the hole where the nest was. The area in front of you is
one of two moving blocks which you can push about.

To speed things up, however, you can shoot it. Push (or shoot) it over
the first vertical shaft, but let it fall all into Blackdown Tunnel and
all the way to...Okhotsk Cavern, the first wind cavern you have come
across (the one in Eridanus is not worth a mention). Shoot the block all
the way down into the water in Hercules Tunnel. On your way down with it,
you will see a glowing rock, radioactive coronium, and some green frogmen.

Follow the block and remember a position above the water, and one near
sloping tunnel beneath the water (so that you would be beneath the moving
block if you teleported there).

Remember another position on the moving block, then throw all your
grenades at the green frogmen. Should only one be destroyed, shoot the
other with the icer into the fire behind it, or detonate four more
grenades.

Teleport so that you appear beneath the moving block. Use your icer to
blast it out of Blackdown Tunnel, along Hercules Tunnel, just past the
burning bush. Then shoot it up the shaft towards Brazil Cave.

Keep shooting until it is level with the flame-throwing gargoyle. Make
the block hover in mid-air, but close to the gargoyle. You will need to
arrange your aiming angle properly. When the gargoyle has destroyed
itself, let the block drop back down. Destroying this gargoyle also blows
another one up at the top of Brazil Cave.

Do not touch the coronium, but kill the white birds that are probably
chasing you and then shoot the block further along Hercules and into Cetus
Tunnel.

Proceed down Cetus, remembering a position along the way, and then up to
the piranha nest at the summit of the left turning. When the piranhas
appear, pick one up and store it away quickly. Blow away the remaining
ones. With extreme prejudice!

At the summit, go down the other side and take the first turning on the
left. There you should find a coronium rock. Note, these are harmful out
of water, but this situation is soon to be remedied...

Pick it up, and use its weight to walk left through the mushrooms along
Keilder Tunnel until you come across a small set of red ones. Remember all
positions at the bottom of the trench just before the red mushrooms. Drop
the coronium and float up to Triton Tunnel. To the right is a half-wall, a
gap, a white bush, and a pill-shaped object - the Radiation Immunity Pill.

In front of it is an arrow-shaped tunnel leading up diagonally. Position
yourself beneath the entrance of this tunnel and briefly retrieve your
piranha and store it away quickly. The bush will pull you in as well as the
RIP. Repeat this procedure until the RIP is clean out of the small cave
and onto your side of the bush.

After collecting the RIP, return to the coronium, pick it up and head
back along Keilder Tunnel. When free of the mushrooms, wait until you can
use your jetpack again and take the coronium to the top of Cetus Tunnel.
Drop it in the left part of Hades Tunnel.

Position the moving block so it is against the left side of Cetus, and
go up into the right-hand section of Hades Tunnel. Remember your position
before the button, then lie yourself down in front of the vertical door
and fire at the button. The door will open and youll be blown to the
right. Here is the first coronium rock you saw, and a nest.

Pick up the coronium, boost thrust to the left, and throw the coronium
after you have passed over the horizontal door. Press > and < to achieve
maximum throwing power. It may be helpful to shift your screen so youre
in the top left-hand corner.

Once the coronium is past the plant, teleport out and press the button
to deactivate the plant and close the vertical door. Collect the coronium,
and take it to the moving block. Push the block against the tile door, and
place the coronium against the door also.

Fetch the other coronium rock from Hades and drop it onto the other.
Descending, you will find the tile door has been blown open. Now enter
Pascal Cave.

Here you will see some red acid dropping from the ceiling. These are
dangerous to touch, so make your way carefully to the left. When the
monkeys start attacking, they throw flashing dots - these are coronium
crystals (smaller versions of the rocks that act rather like grenades).

Collect three of these crystals and then exit Pascal Cave and return to
to Hades Tunnel. Enter the passage with the button in the usual way, and
proceed to the nest to the right.

Jump around in there, and green glooks emerge. Feed one with a coronium
crystal (its mouth is the white region on one side), and it turns yellow
(Wow!) Get this one out of here using the same method as with the
coronium, and take it to Pascal Cave.

There, place it beneath an acid drop and it will convert into a coronium
rock. Return it to Hercules Tunnel and repeat the procedure for the other
two glooks, making sure that none of the coronium rocks touch each other.

Pick one of them up and drop it against the door to the left of Pascal
Cave. Collect another and drop it onto this, blowing the door open. Very
pointless? No, very useful in a moment.

Descend into the Cetus abyss again. On the right is a small niche
containing a bush. Float around in there and a harmless giant fish
appears. Catch it and take it to the surface. Take it through Pascal Cave
and place it in the little cave just beyond it with the piranha nest and
button in.

Then return to Hades Tunnel and fly up through Brazil and into Scorpius
Cave. Remember all your positions just before the long line of red
mushrooms. Then return to your collection of coronium rocks and remember a
position here. Collect one of them and carry it up into Scorpius. Take it
up the first vertical shaft in Scorpius and then into the first long
tunnel on your right.

Throw the coronium into the red bush with the mushrooms on top, and
teleport out before you are pulled in. The coronium should now drop down
into the pit below the bush.

Now walk through Pascal Cave, fly up the wind tunnel to Palermo Cave and
pick up the boulder. Float up to the Scorpius entrance, drop the boulder
inside and remember a position here. Skill is then needed to fly over the
red mushrooms.

It may be helpful in the next bit if you adjust your screen so you are
at the top right.

Descend into the pit below the red bush and collect the coronium. Stay
close to the left wall as you fly upwards and throw it as far as you can
to the left. If the coronium gets stuck in the lower bush - oh dear. Its
lost forever, really.

However, pick up the coronium and throw it through the mushrooms to the
left, and shoot it out the rest of the way. Teleport back to the entrance
here, and remember a position. Then take the coronium up to Sarawak
Cavern. Enter the Sarawak transporter with the rock, and when in Eridanus,
enter the right-hand transporter.

Travel left along Lyre Tunnel into Rune Cavern. Place the coronium on
the tile door there, and teleport back to Scorpius. Collect the boulder
and take it down through Brazil into Hercules Tunnel. Drop it and remember
all your positions. Repeat this procedure for the other rock. This rock
must be dropped onto the other in Rune Cavern. Thus blowing open the gates
to Triaxs lair.

Before we enter, we need the urn and Chatter. Chatter? He needs charging
with coronium crystals first. Teleport back down to Pascal Cave and
remember all your positions here. Collect four crystals from the blue
monkeys there, and then gently fly up the wind tunnel to Sarawak Cavern.
Feed Chatter through his grille, in Behemoth Tunnel.

Use your whistles appropriately to create energy pods and energize
yourself. Teleport back down to Pascal Cave and collect more crystals, and
so on. Repeat this until you feel you have a lot of energy. Then collect
four more crystals, give them to Chatter, but do not activate him.

Retrieve the urn from Yarrow Tunnel, and push Chatter into the Sarawak
transporter, and into the right-hand Eridanus transporter. Follow him into
Lyre Tunnel and activate him. If he wanders off, use whistle one, U, to
call him back.

Proceed to Rune Cavern and drop the urn near the entrance, but make
Chatter follow you below. A warning for Chatter around here: Never go into
Zephyr Cave or Pogrom Tunnel because youll never come back. However, get
him into Carrion Cave and he will start killing the invisible birds. A
warning for yourself: As you are not immune to fire, so the floating fires
near Inferno Cave will be dangerous!

Venture into the Ferro Tunnels below Eclipse Cave. Theres Clutch! The
first of Triaxs marauding robots. Destroy him by way of the grenade
burger, the engine, Chatters electric shots, or the electric gargoyle
near here - though you will need to lead him on down into that tunnel.

Remember your positions slightly to the left of the vertical shaft
leading to the electric gargoyle, and call Chatter using the whistle. When
he arrives, push him down to the electric gargoyle - hes immune to it.
Make sure you can see the gargoyle because Chatter will attack it!

Teleport to your previous position nearby, and you should find the
gargoyle firing as usual. This means Chatter has made his way to the left
of it. Now fly to the gargoyle and watch Chatter take it out! You should
help by firing your icer at it.

Once its gone, continue to the end of the tunnel and collect the plasma
gun. Collect the urn from Rune Cavern and fill it with water from the
entrance to this area. Carefully take the urn through Carrion and into
Eclipse Cave. Then throw it up through the secret rock to the right and
put out the fire. Remember your position here.

Fly into the little cave above and fire the plasma gun over the
mushrooms at the plantpot beyond. There are a couple of mutants in there,
and they fire red projectiles! When they are disposed of, fly as
accurately as you can over the mushrooms to the other side. Lie down and,
when you have recovered from the mushrooms, walk over to the object on the
left - the Fire Protection Unit. Pick it up and teleport back to Eclipse
Cave.

Collect the urn, and fly across Carrion, up Pogrom and into Bigwig
Tunnel, destroying the gargoyle on the way. Land on the little ledge just
before Zephyr Cave, drop the urn and remember your position. Kill the
invisible lightning balls at the top of Zephyr then carefully fly into the
niche to the left and press the button. Thus, a tile door in Larger Tunnel
closes, shielding you from a dangerous bush.

A useful point here: If youre in need of energy, take Chatter down
Pogrom Tunnel (when the tile door is closed) and into Laager Tunnel. Let
him destroy the monkeys in there as they are quite lethal. Then, fire the
plasma gun at the blue mushrooms on the other side of the plantpot.

The high energy, ionless balls will convert the organic spores into
coronium crystals. Pick these up and feed them to Chatter, energizing
yourself with lots of energy in the same way as the Pascal-Sarawak run -
youre going to need it.

However, ascend Bigwig Tunnel and take the first passage on the left,
then descend into Madrigal Cave where you should drop the urn in the
little niche on the right just as you go in. Now fly across the top of
Madrigal Cavern where you will come across Hammer, the second of Triaxs
murderous band. Destroy him as you did with Clutch (you did, didnt you?)
and collect the urn and continue left from here.

At the top of Loganberry Cave is a wasps nest which you must destroy
with your plasma gun so that the nearby bush doesnt pull you in. After
this miniature genocide, an object will fall free of the bush. Retrieve
this object, the blaster, from where it lands (which may even be as far as
Agamen Cave), and drop the urn in Vendetta Tunnel.

Continue along Vendetta and make four coronium crystals out of the
mushroom spores. To get over the red mushrooms, a handy technique is as
follows: Fly as far as you can over them but make sure not to fall into
the diagonal shaft beyond. Remember your position here, and make sure
youre facing to the left.

Then aim the plasma gun at the floor and fire, so as to create a
coronium crystal out of a mushroom spore. Thus, an explosion will take
place that provides a shock to your system and releases you from the
spores intoxicant. While recovered, boost thrust right and upwards so you
fly a little further. If you auto-teleport from the explosion, take care
to remember your position again.

Reaching the other side, youll find some of the deadliest birds known
to humanity. So kill them, descend into Tutelary Cave, wiping out the nest
there, too. Fly down to the cannon burger at the entrance to the Acheron
Caves.

At the bottom is a coronium rock. To get at it, you must fly down, and
lie on your front, positioning the rock so it is beneath your waistbelt.
Then aim your shooting/throwing angle upwards and hold down < and >. You
should find yourself hovering on the rock. If you keep pressing the
keys, you should be able to take the rock to the cannon burger. This is
very tricky and full of auto-teleports, but possible.

When you reach the top, the other bush will pull the rock in. Its
almost a dead-cert that you have auto-teleported now, in which case you
must return to the cannon burger and stand in Fury Tunnel above it.
All you need do now is fire the pistol or icer at the V-shaped trench
opposite the burger. When it fires, the burger will fire at the shot, and
the shockwave should send the rock up to you.

When you finally get it, take it all the way round to Loganberry Cave,
and enter the diagonal slope of the top, being wary of the bush in the
tunnel leading to Madrigal Cave. Drop the rock next to the tile door in
Nebulous Cave.

Oh no, you groan. To open the door, we must get another rock there
as well. Not necessarily. You can convert a glook, or even two, using the
same method as in Pascal Cave, to create the coronium rocks and blow open
the door. Or convert a glook from near Hercules Tunnel and bring it all
the way round to Nebulous Cave, via the wind tunnel and the bush at the
top of Madrigal Cave.

However, all these methods are difficult and involved. The easiest, but
no less time-consuming is this: Push the rock against the tile door in
Nebulous and stand on it. Then quickly drop all four of your coronium
crystals onto it. This involves a bit of key work, and may not work for
several attempts, so save your position beforehand.

When the door is destroyed, the Mushroom Immunity Pill will be blown
back towards you. Pick it up and you are immune to both types of mushroom.
Whoo-pee!

Disappear out of the top of Nebulous, back across Loganberry and
Madrigal, up Bigwig, down Pogrom, and into Laager Tunnel. The button you
pressed near the invisible lightning balls opens and closes the tile door
here to protect you.

Proceed to the end of the tunnel and fire the plasma gun over the gap at
the very end, thus killing the invisible Frogman. To see him, save your
position, and select the See Position option. It will appear blue if you
have it on screen).

Get through the gap in the usual way, and go down to the second nest of
maggots in Eros Cave and kill them all. Doing so destroys both nests.
Floating about in the wind in Eros is the cannon controller. If you cannot
find it, check the side tunnels branching off and below. Then return to
Loganberry Cave and retrieve the urn from Vendetta Tunnel.

Walk to the end of Vendetta Tunnel and into Tutelary. Here, drop the urn
and continue down to the cannon burger. Remember all your positions in
Fury Tunnel. Get its attention by shooting at the doors and it will turn
round and fire, destroying them. Repeat this until all the doors have been
blown open. Another door, in Esplanade Cave, will disappear as well, though
you may not have seen it.

If you havent used the coronium rock at the bottom of this tunnel, make
a coronium crystal and drop it down to destroy it. Then fly across into
the left tunnel and into Esplanade Cave. The best way to do this is to
remember a couple of positions on the way, just in case you are
auto-teleported by the burger.

Continue to the left, kill the monkeys and pick up the pass on the other
side. If you can, destroy the burger here. Fly to the top of Aeolus Cave
and on the left there is a tunnel branching off. Walk along this tunnel
and fly down into Cassandra Cave.

Deep in the blue water below, you will find a menace of monstrous
proportions - Skurj. Oh yes, and the two remaining members of the Pericles
(possibly Lieutenant Nash and Tessara Swift). Undoubtedly, Skurj will be
dogging you, so teleport, with all your weapons, passes and cannon
controller, back to the Perseus.

Fly down to the Pericles, and boost jump up through the airlocks (red
plantpots) so as to knock the cannon from its place. Pick up the grenade
(if it hasnt already been taken), and activate the transporter. Push
the cannon into the transporter and follow it through.

You never expected to appear here! Anyway, push the cannon through the
doors, down to the surface and into the caves. Test the cannon on the
locked door leading to Eridanus, and then let it fall into the tunnel
below. Push it across and off the ledge into the tunnel below.

Then go up to the two transporters and activate the left-hand one with
your RCD. Press the button nearby so it is in the out position, which sets
the left-hand transporters destination as the cabin of the Pericles.

Go back down to the cannon and remember your position there. Force the
cannon into the transporter to the left and arm your blaster. Enter the
transporter yourself, with blaster blasting as soon as you reach your
destination, and destroy the robot wandering around there. If it isnt,
give the cannon a test-run.

Collect the energy pod from the little cave above and then destroy the
burger opposite with the cannon. Push both table and cannon over the gap
and into the transporter beyond. This will take you to the top of Sarawak,
where you must shoot them upwards and into the cave with the Pericles
engine. Place the cannon on the ledge of the small, windy area and fire at
the tile door.

If any of these bulky items falls to the bottom of this windy area, just
push them along to the left, into the transporter where you found Chatter
and they will appear near the engine.

Push both objects across the gap and into the transporter, activate it
and follow them through. Now you will find yourself in a dangerous
situation (so save your position before entering the transporter!)

You are in a bush, and a burger may be firing at you. However, move the
cannon across, and place it on the slope so that its cone is pointing at
the burger. Then fire several shots simultaneously at the burger. After
several attempts, you will discover the correct height for this. When its
destroyed you will be able to enter the last place thats worth
investigating.

There are two ways to enter Acheron. The first: Get your RCD (or you
could use Fluffy, the cannon controller or a grenade for this), and throw
it through the gap so that it bounces off the wall and hits the button at
the bottom, thus opening the horizontal door below. Kill the mutants!

The second is to place the cannon on the tile door and aim the cannon
controller at it so it produces many explosions. Hopefully, the tile door
will be blown open.

Continuing, move the cannon into the pit and take out the vertical tile
door in front of you. The fourth and final robot that will chase you is
Hadley, the most lethal of all the robots. Divert him away, then let the
cannon and table drop into his abode. Face the cannon at the tile door and
watch it disappear as those yellow cannonshells hit it. Move the cannon
down to the horizontal door at the very bottom.

There are two ways to enter deeper into Acheron. The first is to use the
same method as the first horizontal tile door here. A useful tip is to
aim the cannon controller from the little ledge above the door and push
the cannon close to the right-hand wall. It is also useful to put the
table into the plant at the top, thus preventing some accidents.

The second way is to push the table across the tunnel leading down, and
place it over the touch-sensitive door. Retrieve the urn from Tutelary
Cave and place it on top of the table, just beneath the button. Fly down
to the cannon and remember your position on top of it. The following
method is re-usable, even if you are surrounded by water and trying to get
into Acheron Cave.

When you are ready and the cannon is over the door, jump up, and fire at
the touch-sensitive door with your pistol or icer. The door will slide
upwards, knocking the table into the air and making the urn hit the
button. At this point, push the cannon down.

When you enter Acheron Central, you must have with you your RCD and
cannon controller.

Down in Acheron you will see your Destinator and the Maggot Machine.
Notice how it works, because the explosions can harm you. Also, do not go
below the highest water level of the waterfall because the transporter
will switch off, and the maggots will come after you.

If you ever need to come out of Acheron, teleport back to your ship - it
is the only way out if you have not destroyed the lower tile door. The
quickest way then to get back is to enter the transporter in Eridanus, the
one in Lyre or the transporter in Waters to get you to Sarawak. Then use
the transporter near the Pericles engine to travel to the entrance to
Acheron. Use the method of opening the horizontal door to actually enter
Acheron Cave.

Position the cannon at the edge of the maggot machine cave and, as soon
as a maggot has been transported, push it down. Follow it, and keep it on
the little ledge at the bottom. Move it so that it is against the tile
door. Remember your position here, and quickly fly up to the little crack
facing the Maggot Machine. Get your RCD out, aim it at the transporter and
re-activate it.

Teleport back down to the cannon, store your RCD and use the cannon
controller to destroy the door. If the switch is destroyed as well, you
cannot complete the game. Too bad.

This next part involves concentration and co-ordination. As you may have
noticed, the horizontal door below you keeps on opening and closing. When
it opens, the water level falls, and when it closes, the water level
rises. So, to destroy the Maggot Machine, press the button when the door
opens, so that you keep it closed and the water level rises. Keep doing
this until the water level is above the Maggot Machine. You hear a
rumbling, and the screen starts shaking. The Maggot Machine has been
destroyed! But... Earthquake! The water level continues rising.

Now fly up the waterfall and switch the transporter off. Continue up and
take your Destinator. Place it in the transporter and re-activate it. This
will take you and your Destinator to Cassandra. Watch out for Triax and
his marauders. The robots kill, Triax steals the Destinator and returns it
to Acheron.

You may have noticed a certain schizophrenia about Triax. This is
because he is not alone; there are two green-suited figures in the land of
Exile. One is courageous and can jet about in water, the other is a coward
and cannot manoeuvre in water. Moreover, Chatter only fires at one of
them. Spooky.

Back to the game: In Cassandra, watch the water rise so it floats the
moving block at the entrance to the tunnels in the middle of the cave.
Place the Destinator in the transporter.

Go down into the little side tunnel and press the switch. Exit those
tunnels and go down to the place where you first saw the two crew members
and Skurj. The door is unlocked, allowing you to proceed inside and rescue
the crew. Get underneath each one and force them out of the cave and into
the transporter with the Destinator. This part must be done accurately,
because if one of the crew floats to the top its a big job getting them to
your spaceship.

Activate the transporter and pile everything in it, which will end up
near the bush above where you found Hadley. Grab the Destinator, but let
the people float to the top, past the cannon burger. If you go up with
them, the burger will fire and destroy all of you.

You can try two methods to do this next, intricate part.

The first: Move the humans all the way across Vendetta Tunnel, and
through Loganberry, across Madrigal, up to the top of Bigwig and into Rune
Cavern where you push them out of the top and into the winds of the Aurora
Plain. Follow them out and push them down into Eridanus and into the
left-hand transporter so they end up in the Pericles. Then push them into
the transporter there, so as to re-appear in the Perseus.

The second: Once at the top, push everyone into Abscond Tunnel. Move
them all along this tunnel and activate the transporter. You will now end
up in Spiegels laboratory, near the engine, which you must turn off.
Shove your friends off the edge, and into the transporter where you found
Chatter.

Push them to the right, all the way down into Behemoth Tunnel and enter
the transporter with them. If the water level has risen greater than the
height of Behemoth Tunnel, the humans will be unable to enter the
transporter because they float. To solve this, you must put them both into
the tunnel leading down and place boulders on them to give them weight.

You must reach the bottom before they do. To move them towards the
transporter, move the boulder slightly to the right, and then the person,
and then the boulder, and so on, until you can give them a shove into the
transporter. This should be repeated for both of them. Follow them through
and youll transport into Eridanus. If the left-hand transporter has been
activated and set to arrive at the Pericles, that is where youll end up.
Push them all into the transporter, and they will go to the Perseus.

To escape, place the Destinator in the upper, left side of the Perseus.

          CONGRATULATIONS...YOU HAVE COMPLETED EXILE...WELL DONE!

So, there you have it; a blockbuster of a game completed. Many thanks to
those who helped, Peter Tillotson and Kevin Rooney, and to those who use
this solution. And a big thankyou to HAL at the Databay.

What about the coordinator, master-mind and mass-murderer Triax? Dont
ask! I wonder where the other Destinator disappeared to. And the Pericles
engines still work...
