Hercules Dynamite OS/2 Driver Frequently Asked Question List Last Updated 9/20/94 This file is intended to suplement the installation instructions in the README.TXT file. If you have any questions not addressed in this file or README.TXT, let us know. ----- Q. Do I install the VGA driver prior to changing video drivers? A. Yes. Load the VGA driver provided with OS/2 before installing the Dynamite drivers. Q. After installing the Dynamite drivers, my screen comes up split into sections, with vertical lines through the screen. A. This is caused by incorrect monitor refresh rate selection, or incorrect driver selection. If this occurs, select the VGA driver, then reinstall the Dynamite drivers. Consult your monitor manual for refresh rate information. To set the system to the VGA driver: insert the OS/2 Installation Disk 0, then re-boot. When prompted, insert Disk 1. At the first blue screen, press ESC. This will bring you to an OS/2 full screen session. Enter the OS/2 subdirectory, then type: SETVGA X : (X = the drive OS/2 is installed on) Follow the on screen prompts from this point, then re-boot. Q. After I run the SETMODE program, I receive an error stating that my hardware does not support this mode, or does not support SVGA? A. This problem in most often caused by the absence of, or the corruption of, the SVGADATA.PMI file. Enter a DOS full screen session. From the OS/2 directorym type: SVGA ON This will create a SVGADATA.PMI file. Q. When I type SVGA ON in a DOS full screen, I receive a message stating "This program must be run from a DOS full screen session." But I'm in a DOS full screen! A. This is the result of corruption in the currently installed video drivers and/or the current SVGADATA.PMI file. To resolve this problem, reinstall the VGA driver, then try again. If this fails, boot into standard DOS. Enter the OS/2 directory, then type: SVGA ON DOS This creates a SVGADATA.DOS file. Rename this file as SVGADATA.PMI, then restart OS/2. Q. My WIN-OS/2 full screen session is shifted off center. A. Use POWERTUN.COM to center the Win-OS/2 full screen sessions. Add the following statement to the end of the Win-OS/2 AUTOEXEC.BAT file: X:\HERCULES\POWERTUN I Where X: is the drive containing your \HERCULES directory. Open a DOS full screen session. From the \HERCULES directory, type: POWERTUN A Follow the onscreen directions to configure the screen refresh for each resolution. After the adjustment is complete, exit the DOS full screen session. Evoke Win-OS/2 full screen to test the new configuration. Q. When I enter a Win-OS/2 full screen session, then switch back to the OS/2 desktop, my system hangs when I re-enter the Win-OS/2 full screen session. A. Enter the settings for the Win-OS/2 full screen. Set the Video Switch Notification to "ON". Q. How do I install the Service Pack upgrade with the Dynamite installed? A. Prior to installing the Service Pack, or any OS/2 upgrade, install the standard VGA driver provided with OS/2. Temporarily REM out any references to POWERTUN from your AUTOEXEC.BAT files. After the Service Pack installation is complete, reinstall the Dynamite drivers and remove the REMarks from your AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Q. Seamless windows will not function. A. This problem can have several causes. Some are related to the video configuration, and some are not. In this case, use "Selective Install" to install the VGA driver, then remove any references to POWERTUN, SETCRT, or POWERHZ from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If the problem continues with the VGA driver, contact IBM for technical support. If the problem does not occur with the VGA driver, re-install the Dynamite drivers or contact Hercules technical support. Q. My DOS programs run slowly, or lock up when switching from a windowed to a full-screen session. A. This problem can also have several causes. Some are related to the video configuration, and some are not. Depending on what application you're running, the DOS settings will need adjustment. See pages 329-332 in your OS/2 users manual. These pages contain a description of the available DOS settings regarding video configuration. Q. How do I use SuperStable refresh rates for OS/2? A. SuperStable refresh rates can only be used if your monitor supports a vertical refresh rate of 90Hz or higher. Enter a standard DOS partition with the Hercules software installed, or boot from a DOS diskette. From the \HERCULES directory, or the root directory of the Dynamite Installation Diskette, type the following two commands: POWERHZ [enter] SETCRT -n X X X X [enter] Replace the X's with the values corresponding to the desired scan rates. See the Dynamite manual for a table of SETCRT options. Enter the OS/2 directory, then type: SVGA ON DOS This creates a SVGADATA.DOS file. Rename this file to SVGADATA.PMI, then restart OS/2. *** End of File ***
