It's true. Symbiosis 97 is here.

For a couple of years, Ch:ilm, sysop of SL1210 BBS, has organised a
competition, simply called "SLCOMPO". There were three editions of
this compo, and each edition was more successful than it's predecessor.
The compos were held on the BBS only, and not really on the
Internet. Scale was small, knowingly, wantingly.

There were never any big prizes in one of the compos. 1st prize has
always been a cup of coffee, ask Mekx =]. People entered their song
for the sheer fun of it, winning the compo is considered an honour!
Winning showed that the public thought you were the best of the con
  testants.

Right now it's time to take the SL Compo concept to a new high. PSC
of Trance-o-Mania joined forces and now both Explizit and ToM bring
you: Symbiosis 97. The first real techno compo in the scene.

The main Web-address for the compo is

                 http://symbiosis.macaw.nl

For latest developments, check out that site.

If you want to stay updated on the current situation (voting
results, news, announcements, etcetera) subscribe yourself to
our mailing list by sending a message to

                 compo-listserv@limbu.nl

with the following line in the body of the message:

                 SUBSCRIBE SYMBIOSIS-UPDATES

  You will NOT receive confirmation.

Anyway what we want you do do is simple and straightforward. Im sure
you're working on a real nice techno song right now. This can be any
kind: gabber, acid, rave, trance, ambient, drum 'n' bass, club, etcetera.

Finish this track like you normally would. You can pack a file_id
with it, your group's info-file, anything. But if you want to enter
your song in our competition, fill in the SYMB.FRM file as well
  (included in this archive).

Then spread the song like you normally would, but do 1 thing extra:
make sure it reaches us. This can be done in two ways:

  - Upload it to the FTP site. This URL to be exact:

    ftp://sdc.wtm.tudelft.nl/pub/music/symbiosis/incoming/

When you have uploaded the zipped song a script will check it.
The script scans for the SYMB.FRM file and that it is filled in
correctly. Only when this form checks out okay, your entry is
    moved to the compo directory:

    ftp://sdc.wtm.tudelft.nl/pub/music/symbiosis/

Note that you cannot download songs from the incoming dir and
that you cannot upload songs in the symbiosis dir. So only when
a song appears in the symbiosis directory it is accepted and you
    can download it safely.

  - OR: Send your song via email to this address:

    symbiosis-submit@limbu.nl

Make sure this line of text is in the body of the message:

    SUBMISSION FOR SYMBIOSIS

Either way, you can enter your songs from march 30 till may 10th.

Your song can be any format you want, we don't care much. We don't
want to force you into a specific tracker! Just use any tracker
you like, this can be Scream/Fast/Impulse or just whatever you
prefer personally. IT or XM would be most wise.

There is no max as for size is conserned. We actually don't care how
big/bad/strange the song is, but remember that *YOU* need as many
votes as you can to win!

After may 10, it's time to vote, and you can vote from may 10 till
june 10. That first voting-round will be public. By that time it will
be possible to vote online on the Symbiosis website.
  Simply point your browser to

  http://symbiosis.macaw.nl

More information about the voting-system will be published through
the mailing-list (updates) and ofcourse on the website.

The voting-procedure will be pretty simple and straighforward tho'.
If you want to, you can leave a comment for the composer of a certain song.
You might want to tell him why you voted for him, that sort of thing is
always nice to read for a composer.

You will NOT be able to see any preliminary results when the voting-
rounds are still running. This is to prevent cheating. Only when all
voting is done the results will be published.

After this public voting round the second voting round comes in.
Only the top 50% of all entries will make it into this round. Songs
that did not make it will be announced on the website and thru the
mailing-list. If you also want to vote for the second round, you must
register yourself as a Judge. You can do this by clicking on 'BECOMING A
JUDGE' on the Symbiosis website (http://symbiosis.macaw.nl ).

The reason for this procedure is that we must be absolutely sure that
no-one can be a Judge twice. Judges's votes have a weight times three,
and therefore can make a big difference.

When your application is approved (you need to be sortof 'known'
in the scene for that) you (as a judge) will receive an e-mail message
saying you're a Judge. You can then login to symbiosis.macaw.nl
with your Judge-name and password and register your vote. On the sheet
you will see five entries that you must assign a score to. Note that you
are obliged to listen to ALL FIVE tracks and rate them individually. You
can rate the songs with a score from 10 to 100, 100 being top of the scale.

Judges are also obliged to enter a comment for the song. This is nice
for the composer to read and could help him in his/her tracking
career. Forms without any comments will not be accepted.

Being a Judge is not something you can take lightly, it's quite a
heavy task that demands involvement. But it's an important task
and "someone's gotta do it", right? ;)

Judges can vote from june 10 till june 30.

After that second voting round, only 50% will make it into the
third and final round. The songs that have not made it will be
announced on the website and thru the mailing-list.

Voting for the third round is not public; one can only be invited
to vote. We will only invite people who are unbiased and have been
in the scene for quite a while.

The third round will last until july 15th.

The final results will then be published on july 20th, 1997.

We will count ALL valid votes and no vote will be double-counted.
You may enter ONE SONG PER COMPOSER. If a certain composer enters
more songs, the composer is disqualified.

  Here are the dates again:

MAR 30 - Start of the compo.
            MAY 10 - FINAL DAY
Make sure your song IS SUBMITTED before
this day, or you CAN NOT participate.
                         Voting online will be possible
JUN 10 - End of voting round one.
                         Judge applications must be submitted
before this day, or you cannot vote.
Songs that did not make it will be published.
JUN 30 - End of voting round two.
Songs that did not make it will be published.
JUL 15 - Third, private voting round ends.
JUL 20 - The results will be announced.
