Moving Average

The Moving Average tab is used to define or modify all types of moving averages of price. You can leave the "*" in the Name field unchanged (recommended) and a name will be generated automatically when you [Apply] the study.

If you modify the Name field it will be used as the study name.

If you already have one or more MA's defined, you may modify them by clicking the down arrow at the end of Name selection box and selecting the one you wish to modify from the list. Then modify any of the parameters and <click> [Apply].

You can delete studies from the Selected Studies tab.

When you first <click> on the Moving Average tab, or any of the other study tabs, the Name field shows an asterisk ( * ) and the other fields contain default parameters for creating a new study of this type. Once you have the parameters set for what you want <click>ing the [Apply] button will add the new study to the chart.

Note: Each study has a required amount of data before it can be calculated. For instance a 200 period moving average can only be calculated after you have at least 200 points in the chart. This is the reason no studies show when you first start collecting data in an empty intraday chart. The studies will start to plot as soon as sufficient data is accumulated.

The Time Period specifies the number of data points the average is computed over. (For daily charts a data point is 1 day, for weekly a data point is 1 week, i.e. a data point is the time period of the chart). The Method selects the method for computing the average. The Price field selects which price of each data point is used in computing the average. Mid Pt. selects (High+Low/2), Typical is (High+Low+Close)/3, and Weighted Close is: (High+Low + 2*Close)/4.

The Offset from MA field is a factor which is multiplied by the moving average value computed before it is plotted. This can be used to generate bands at a fixed percentage offset from the actual average. For example if you want to show a pair of bands at the 50 day moving average + and - 20%, you would create two 50 day moving averages, and make the Offset from MA field 1.2 for the +20% band and .8 for the -20% band. Leave this field 1 for a normal moving average.

The Line Attributes group specifies the Width as well as the of the color of the study line. The [Color] button is used to change the color of the line. Pressing [Apply] or [OK] creates or modifies the study.
