OverView and Description
Windows Security Toolkit is an excellent security tool developed for windows 98 and
2000 enviornment ,which can come in real handy. It Combines the power of security tools and
Win32 API calls to Map a secure Enviornment for Windows much like that seen in Windows
NT.Many features are not even present in Windows NT.The Programs Main Menu is Divided into
four parts or sections, each one with its own security features
- Control Panel Section
- Desktop and Start Menu Section
- Network Security Section (Anti-Hacking Tools)
- MS-Dos Security Section
Note-In the following
paragraphs, the term Administrator means the person having access to this software and the
word user means any person using the computer on which this software has been installed
but does not has access to this software.
- Control Panel Security. This
section deals with six basic and advanced settings involving the control panel .They are
- Passwords Access Restrictions. This setting allows the
Administrator(the person having access to this software),to restrict other users from
viewing ,modifying deleting or adding new passwords to the passwords settings from the
Control Panel. If any one tries to use the passwords settings from the control panel,a
warning message will appear, telling the user that the system administrater ,i.e. the
person using this software has not authorised the user to access these settings.
- Network Access Restrictions. This setting allows the
Administrator to restrict users from Accessing or modifying ,either accidently or
purposefully the Network settings of the Windows Control Panel.
- Display Access Restrictions. This Setting allows the
Administrator to Restrict Users from Accessing the Display settings and to prevent
them from modifying them. That is to restrict users from changing the Appearance,Desktop
Background,Plus,Display Card ,Monitor settings, resolution and color management schemes.
- Device Manager,Virtual Memory and File System Restrictions. This
is a very usefull option which if activated does not allows users to access the device
manager through the system settings and thus avoids any accidental damage or corruption to
the system which might occur if this setting is modified by inexpierience hands. It also
limits access to the file system and Virtual Memory buttons which are keys to windows
smooth running. If your Pc is used by not only you but also by other family members or
friends or colleages ,who you think might corrupt your system then this setting is best
for you.
Start Menu and Desktop Security. This section
deals with six basic and advanced settings involving the Desktop and the Start Menu .Note:
For these settings to Work, after applying them restart the system. They are basically
designed for parents who do not want their children to modify any of
their personal settings.They are
- Hide All items on the desktop. This setting can hide all
items presently located on the desktop.Use this setting if you have given your kids access
to the Computer and you think they might change or damage any desktop settings you might
not want them to.
- Hide the Favorites Folder and the Documents Folder. This
setting hides the Favourites Folder from the start menu ,so that small kids dont have
direct access to any of their parents favourite webpages ,documents or other items ,which
the kids are not allowed to view or modify.
- Dont save Dektop Settings at Shut Down. This Setting is
extremely usefull not only for parents but for any person who doesnot wants the desktop
settings to be saved,if they are modified, normally windows saves any changes made to the
desktop ,because it can not judge whether the settings modified were done on purpose or
accidently. This feature gives you the choice of deciding whether to save any changes made
to your desktop or not when the system shutsdown.
- Hide the TaskBar,Printer, and Control Panel . This setting restricts Access to these items from the start menu.
Network Security. This section deals with four
advanced settings involving the Network. They are
- Disable File Sharing over the network. This powerfull
feature has Windows NT power .It limits access of files on a computer from other users
trying to access the files from outside .i.e over a network. It also restricts
Hackers from entering your system while you go online on the internet by
forming a data Non-Access Fire Wall and thus keeps the computer secure from the outside
world.
- Disable Printer Sharing over the network. This setting
allows the administrator to choose whether he wishes to allow others access to his printer
or not over the network.
- Disable Users from using the dial up networking to access the
internal network. This is a
powerfull Anti-Hacking Tool for the Computer Administrator. It does not allows
any one to access the internal network from a modem connection or network
neighbourhood.Very usefull for Companies using Local Area Networks.
- Hide Share Passwords With Asteriks. Windows
by default shows any shared passwords. This settings hides them so that no third party can
view them.
MS-DOS Security. This section deals with
advanced settings involving the MS-DOS Mode and any programs that access the dos mode. They
are
- Disable use of msdos mode through windows. This setting
does not allow the user to access the Dos mode,or to use any commands or programs that use
a dos based driver to run.including all the games which use DOS4GW driver.
- Disable Single Mode Msdos Mode. This restricts the user
from restarting his computer from msdos mode.and thus gives the administrator more
security for the windows enviornment which might be overcomed by a professional who knows
dos well.
