Exam file name : D2I6JPH.ZIP Title conquered : DOOM 2 Incubus Author : Jason Patrick Henry Completion date : 10-23-97 Game and version used : DOOM II v. 1.9 Authentication dance : FRF - FRR - RFF Log entry - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 19970910 0936 CHAL: D2I6 JPH 20 10 17 (00) 19970910 0936 : Jason Patrick Henry - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - System used : A crappy 486/66mhz, 20 megs RAM, lousy old Fahrenheit video card, ancient Soundblaster16. Pretty good Fujitsu keyboard. Map17-NM was recorded on a slightly less crappy P133 with a really cool 17" monitor. :) Controls used : keyboard only, default configuration, with strafe left/right redefined as Z and X respectively (not used in any of these recordings) Free interpretation : Map18, Tyson + SSG :) Comments: This exam was HARD, I tell ya...I don't think living humans were made to play Doom in Nightmare!!! MAP20-NM.LMP: "Easy" is a liberal word for this level, although compared to the others, it certainly falls in that category...the biggest danger is the 2nd pain elemental, often he will spit out souls that will knock you in the lava, almost certain death if that happens. Time = 3:44. MAP10-NM.LMP: Peo's route in his shotgun-only lmp (NM10-SG) makes this one relatively easy, I used more than shotgun though. :) Time = 2:35. MAP17-NM.LMP: When I saw that I had drawn this level, I nearly cried...but it could have been worse, I suppose. It took over six hours and 100's of attempts to survive this one, mostly on my brother's P133 (I quickly learned I needed the extra fps in order to have even a remote chance of survival...) The part that had me stumped was dealing with that damn arachnotron guarding the yellow key. I watched dozens of NM17 lmps, and they all used the same method, jump in the radiation and hope to get lucky. I tried that but only survived once in about 30 tries, with so little health that I had no chance of surviving the rest. Finally I came up with my own method, by taking the soulsphere AND the invisibility first and killing that damn spider from outside the pit. It works like magic, you're almost guaranteed to reach the yellow key with at least 150% health! Although I've done map11 on NM before, which is also ranked as a hard level, the two maps are worlds apart -- map11 is only hard for the first minute, once you get the red key you're almost sure to make it. This one stays tough all the way through, there are parts which require pure luck (hell knight & invisible pigs) and other parts where you should EXPECT to lose 100% health. :) The final chaingunner battle here nearly gave me a heart attack, as I watched my health drop from 85% to 3% in less than a second... Time = 6:35. FREE-NM.LMP: Originally I was going to do map18 with -fast, but it was too easy, the monsters killed each other so quickly! So instead I settled for regular UV, using fist only, except for 7 cacos where I used SSG. I guess I could have used pistol against them to make it a true Tyson lmp, but that would have been really boring...yeah, that's the ticket. Time = 10:28. Author info: 30 yrs old, living in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Today's earthquake forecast calls for sustained shaking of 3.0 to 4.0 with occasional jolts up to 5. Check out my homepage at http://www.wgn.net/~space to see what a completely obsessive nutcase I am. :) Thanks to: Frank Stajano for DHT id software (duh) Peo Sjoblom, my "Doom guru", for all his helpful advice. My brother Dan for letting me borrow his computer. :) All the others who have completed NM17 previously -- Istvan Pataki, Anthe Kren, Peo, and doubtless others I'm forgetting. I wonder if anyone's done that level from scratch, WITHOUT the jump-tricks? :)
