1. What is Free Starcraft Game Server (FSGS) ?

Free Starcraft Game Server is a server to host battle.net like Starcraft games. You could call it a battle.net clone, but it does not support all Battle.net features

2. What is the current version and where can I find updates ?

The current version is 0.5.2 and you can go to www.fsgs.com for further info and program updates

3. What platforms are supported ?

The Server currently runs on Windows 95,98 & NT. A linux/UNIX port IS planned, but it is gonna take some time because FSGS is heavily dependent on MFC.

The Server will (of cource) accept connections from all Starcraft games no matter what platform they run on.

4. What Battle.net Features are not available ?

The following features are missing:

* You cannot change the picture in the "ad space"
* Some chat commands may not work yet
* the "blizzard" and "bnet" chat icons is reserved for "official" business

5. Is there any other limitations ?

No, FSGS is only limited by the available memory and network bandwidth

6. Can FSGS connect to other servers like battle.net ?

Although you cannot connect your FSGS server to the official battle.net, it can be connected to other FSGS servers. To connect to other FSGS server you need to do the following

  1. Open the Server configuration dialog
  2. Enter the appropriate information about your LOCAL server
  3. enable the Checkbox "Connect to FSGS inter-server network"
  4. if you like your server to be visible on on the upcoming WebPages and to the /servers chat command, enable the "publish server on WWW-pages" checkbox
  5. select OK to finish the dialogbox
  6. restart the server

7. Why did you reserve the use of "Blizzard" and "bnet" chat icons ?

Having them freely available lead to too much confusion, so now they are reserved. the "bnet" icon will only be used by inter-server Administrators and the "blizzard" icon will only be used if an official blizzard personal is online.

8. Why can't I use the ad space for ad's ?

Because I personally dislike ads, and it only sucks up bandwidth. It MIGHT be enabled in a later version

9. Can I configure the server in any way ?

Yes, go to Server->Configuration->Options

10. Can I kick/ban users from my server ?

yes, use the /ban and /kick commands

11. Will playing on a FSGS server change my battle.net stats ?

No

12. Is connecting to FSGS dangerous?

Well depends on the person running the server. Be aware that connection to the server will reveal your CD-KEY if the operator is smart enough. It's not shown in FSGS but there are ways to get it.

13. Do you send Registry Keys if I connect to FSGS?

NO. Although SC has the very doubtable function in it to request ANY registrykey from a connecting Starcraft(TM), I don't and will never make use of it.

14. Are there any backdoors in FSGS ?

No. (Excluding the limitations documented in the ChangeLog)

15. Wasn't the initial code GPL? Will FSGS be it too ?

Yes and no. Until Version 0.3.12 FSGS was based on the BNETD of Mark@StarHack which is under GPL. The source of this didn't differ a lot from the available sources. [Mainly windows sockets and ui adding] (Source available on request) After 0.3.12 I decided that it would lead too much to a spaghetti code to keep this up and I rewrote the whole server from scratch, not using anything from the initial GPL Version. The version of FSGS you see now is completely based upon C++/Windows Features and makes in depth use of MFC. A part of the source will be released under GPL when most of the bugs are fixed.

16. Do you ever plan to charge for FSGS?

By all means NO. This is and will be a free Program. And if I see anyone charging for playing on it, I will ban the server-ip from all future versions.

17. What to do if a Dr.Watson or a Assertion window pops up?

Just choose "OK" and send me files mentioned in the readme.

18. I get randomly "Can not authenticate map" when I try to play ladder maps in non ladder mode.

That is currently looked into and will be fixed in one of the next releases.

19. I get a "cannot open logfile" error when I try to run FSGS

The windows registry is telling FSGS that it is installed somewhere else than it is being run from. Delete the FSGS entry in the registry using regedit. Remember to Back up the registry before doing it, and that you are doing it AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

20. Why are there people on my server that didn't log on to it?

This is because you are connected to the FSGS Inter-server Network. It works mainly like Battle.Net(TM). See above how to enable/disable it.

21. Will it be able again to "adjust" player records ?

Yes, as soon as the database is done, you will be able to edit local player-records. This changes however will not effect the records sent to other servers. There will be simply two entries for every user, a local and a inter-server-record. Else implementing Ladder will be senseless.

22. When I connect to a FSGS server it show no lag bar, but as soon I play it lags horrible.

Well as soon as you join a game, FSGS is out of it. All communication will be done among the clients. And if someone is in the game, who has a bad ping to you it will lag. I'm currently working on implementing a real-lag-bar that shows your personal lag to every user, but it's still in development.

23. What happens if I change the MOTD or the gfx?

Well I will be angry and you will be breaking   the law .) (I keep the door open to take further steps of course)
