INSTALLING THE STB DRIVER AND THE POWERDESK UTILITY ------------------------------------------------------------------ A) First Time Install --------------------- The first time the STB video adapter is installed in your system, Windows 95 will auto-detect it at startup. If you are upgrading STB drivers that are currently installed, go to the "Video Driver Upgrade Installation" section below. 1. Start Windows 95. When Windows 95 detects the new hardware and asks which drivers to use, choose the following and click OK: "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer" 2. Insert the STB video driver diskette 1 into drive A and press OK. 3. If you're installing from CD-ROM, change to the directory that contains the STB video driver. (If installing from diskette, it is not necessary to change directories.) 4. Select the software driver for the STB video adapter that you have installed in the system and choose OK. 5. In the 'Display Type' window, click on the CLOSE button. 6. In the 'Display Properties' window, click on the CLOSE or APPLY button. 7. When the 'System Settings Change' window appears with a message asking if you want to restart your computer, click on YES. (If installing from diskettes, remove the diskette from the drive before you restart the computer.) Your STB video driver is now installed. B) Video Driver Upgrade Installation ------------------------------------ NOTE: Before installing the STB video driver, please close all open application programs and disable any anti-virus software that is running on your computer until the STB driver installation is complete! The standard Windows 95 procedure is used to to install the driver. The general procedure is the following: 2. After Windows 95 has finished starting, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The 'Display Properties' window appears. Note: You can also display the 'Display Properties' window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop background and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Click on the CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE or ADVANCED PROPERTIES button. The 'Change Display Type' or 'Advanced Display Properties' window appears. 6. Under the 'Adapter Type' or 'Adapter' tab , click on the CHANGE button. 7. In the 'Select Device' window, click on the HAVE DISK... button. 8. Insert the STB driver for Windows NT 4.0 diskette 1 into drive A; Or, if you have copied the driver files to a directory on your harddrive or to a network drive, enter the correct path and click on the OK button. 9. From the list of displayed STB devices, select the model of your display adapter and then click on the OK button. o If a message appears stating the file being copied is older than the file currently on your computer, select the NO button. 10. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation. Windows 95 may prompt you for additional driver diskettes. 11. In the 'Change Display Type' or 'Advanced Display Properties' window, click on the APPLY or CLOSE button. 12. In the 'Display Properties' window, click on the CLOSE or APPLY button. 13. When the System Settings Change window appears with a message asking if you want to restart your computer, click on YES. Your STB video driver is now installed. | You can customize the installation process by editing the "STB.INF" | file. For example, you can change the default installation path, default | driver performance switches, default schemes, and so on. The file is | self-documented. This type of customization is for advanced users only. - More Information For more information on settings and monitor selections, refer to the on-line bubble help under the STB Configurations tab located under the Display Properties panel after the driver is installed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. CHANGING THE MONITOR SELECTION OR DISPLAY REFRESH RATE ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The STB Windows 95 driver use the standard monitor utility that ships with Windows 95. To set up the monitor refresh rates, follow the instructions below. 1. Start Windows 95. 2. From Windows 95, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 3. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The 'Display Properties' window appears. Note: You can also display the 'Display Properties' window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 5. Click on the CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE or ADVANCED PROPERTIES button. The 'Change Display Type' or 'Advanced Display Properties' window appears. 6. Select the MONITOR tab. 7. If your monitor supports DDC (Plug and Play) and you want the driver to automatically decode the monitor's DDC information when Windows 95 is booted, click on the 'Automatically detect Plug & Play monitors' checkbox. 8. If your monitor does not support DDC or you want to override the DDC information provided by the monitor, select a new monitor by clearing the 'Automatically detect Plug & Play monitors' checkbox and clicking the CHANGE button. 9. Select the desired monitor and click on the 'OK' button. 10. Click OK in the 'Display Properties' window. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. CHANGING THE VIDEO SETTINGS ------------------------------------------------------------------ This section gives a quick overview on how to change your video settings. To change the video settings: 1. From Windows 95, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The 'Display Properties' window appears. Note: You can also display the 'Display Properties' window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 3. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 4. Select the desired resolution, color depth, and font size. 5. Click on the OK or APPLY button. | 6. When prompted, click on the OK button to test the new resolution, | color depth, and screen configuration. | | If the test screen appears garbled or unreadable, your monitor does | not support the current setting. Press NO and select a different | resolution. | | 7. If the test screen appeared OK, press YES to keep the current | setting. Then press OK to close the Display Properties window. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. REMOVING THE STB VIDEO DEVICE DRIVER ------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: Before removing the STB video driver, please close all open application programs and disable any anti-virus software that is running on your computer until the STB driver removal is complete! To remove the STB video driver: 1. From Windows 95, click on the START button, select SETTINGS, and then click on CONTROL PANEL. 2. Double-click on the DISPLAY icon. The 'Display Properties' window appears. Note: You can also display the 'Display Properties' window by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. 3. Click on the SETTINGS tab. 4. Click on the CHANGE DISPLAY TYPE or ADVANCED PROPERTIES button. The 'Change Display Type' or 'Advanced Display Properties' window appears. 5. Under the 'Adapter Type' or 'Adapter' tab , click on the CHANGE button. 6. Click on SHOW ALL DEVICES and select '(Standard display types)' under 'Manufacturers:' and 'Standard Display Adapter (VGA)' under 'Models:'. 7. In the 'Change Display Type' or 'Advanced Display Properties' window, click on the CLOSE or APPLY button. 8. Click on the OK button. 9. In the 'Display Properties' window, click on the CLOSE or APPLY button. 10. When the System Settings Change window appears with a message asking if you want to restart your computer, click on YES. 11. Your system will now restart. 12. Insert the STB driver for Windows 95 diskette 3 into drive A; Or, if you have copied the driver files to a directory on your harddrive or to a network drive, switch to the directory that contains the files for STB driver. If you are using a CD-ROM, switch to the directory that contains the STB video driver. 13. Enter UNINST95 at the DOS command prompt and press Enter. The UNINSTALL program will remove the STB drivers and registry entries and reset the system to VGA mode. 14. Follow the instructions to remove the drivers. 15. Remove the any diskettes and reboot your system. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. ADVANCED FEATURES (For Experienced Users Only!) ------------------------------------------------------------------ STB Configurations Panel ------------------------ Several settings on the STB GLyder MAX-2/2+ video adapter can be tuned. Some of these settings are listed in the various tabs located in STB Configurations panel. Other settings can only be accessed through the registry. This section discusses each of these settings. The STB Configurations panel can be accessed by clicking the right mouse button anywhere on the Desktop background and then selecting the PROPERTIES option from the pop-up menu. Then select the STB CONFIGURATIONS tab. Settings Located in the Direct3D tab of the STB Configurations Panel -------------------------------------------------------------------- Clicking on the Direct3D tab reveals 3 checkboxes that can be used to optimize 3D games and applications that use the Microsoft Direct 3D interface under Windows 95. For detailed information on any of these checkboxes, refer to the on-line bubble help under the Direct3D tab. Simply click on the "?" mark on the upper right corner of the Display Properties page and then click on the setting you'd like more information about. Or, select the setting with the mouse and then click the right mouse button. A box with the question "What's this?" will appear. Click on the box to get more information on the setting that is selected. The three checkboxes under the Direct 3D tab are: Direct 3D Panel Checkbox Associated Registry Setting Default ---------------------------- --------------------------- ------- NoVBlankWait OpenGL.WaitForVBlank OFF Enable 8 Bit RGB Textures OFF Enable True Color Textures OFF Settings Located in the Information tab of the STB Configurations Panel ----------------------------------------------------------------------- There is also some features included on the Information tab located under the STB Configurations panel. NOTES, PROBLEMS, AND LIMITATIONS ------------------------------------------------------------------ Note that depending on the origin of your Microsoft DirectX software, it may not include DirectVideo support. For faster playback of Indeo and Cinepak AVI files, you should install Microsoft DirectVideo support. Adobe Type Manager limitation With Adobe Type Manager installed, you cannot run the driver if the "Advanced Graphics Acceleration Settings" is set to none. Note that ATM is installed as part of Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is an Adobe problem documented in the Windows 95 "display.txt" file. DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management As stated in "Microsoft DirectX release Notes", September 30, 1995, a DirectDraw game may be unable to restore properly if it is suspended by Automatic Power Management utilities. Installation in different language versions of Windows 95 If you install software in a language different from the language of your operating system (for example, English software on a Japanese system), you may have problems with text and dialog box controls being cut off. This is because of differences in system fonts. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. SUPPORTED RESOLUTIONS, COLOR DEPTHS, AND REFRESH RATES ------------------------------------------------------------------ The resolutions and refresh rates supported by the STB driver are dependent on the monitor that is selected. The maximum color depth for each resolution is dependent on two factors. The factors affecting the maximum color depth are the display resolution and the total amount of video memory installed.
